November selection: Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks

Year of Wonders by Geraldine BrooksGeraldine Brooks' Year of Wonders describes the 17th-century plague that is carried from London to a small Derbyshire village by an itinerant tailor.

As villagers begin, one by one, to die, the rest face a choice: do they flee their village in hope of outrunning the plague or do they stay? The lord of the manor and his family pack up and leave. The rector, Michael Mompellion, argues forcefully that the villagers should stay put, isolate themselves from neighboring towns and villages, and prevent the contagion from spreading. His oratory wins the day and the village turns in on itself.

Cocooned from the outside world and ravaged by the disease, its inhabitants struggle to retain their humanity in the face of the disaster. The narrator, the young widow Anna Frith, is one of the few who succeeds. With Mompellion and his wife, Elinor, she tends to the dying and battles to prevent her fellow villagers from descending into drink, violence, and superstition. All is complicated by the intense, inexpressible feelings she develops for both the rector and his wife.

Year of Wonders sometimes seems anachronistic as historical fiction; Anna and Mompellion occasionally appear to be modern sensibilities unaccountably transferred to 17th-century Derbyshire. However, there is no mistaking the power of Brooks's imagination or the skill with which she constructs her story of ordinary people struggling to cope with extraordinary circumstances.

    Kingsolver jokes in the book about a child who thought spaghetti came from the ground. OK, I'm not that bad, but not much better.

    I am only on Chapter Three, yet AVM has opened my eyes to a whole new world of FOOD. It has truly made me question why I have never learned much about where my food comes from, and how all these years I could be stuffing my face without wondering how it was made.

    How could I not know which fruits and vegetables are in season? I literally had to 'google it' to find out, an even bigger sign of the changing times. And it never occured to me WHY buying local and in season was so important to us, outside of the taste.  

    Looking forward to my journey with Kingsolver and learning more.

    You aren't alone.  I had to google the seasons for fruits and veggies too.  Something that was interesting to me are those fruits and veggies that we have no problem only eating once a year. Like watermelon--rarely will you see these in stores in December! 

    I love the recipes in this book!  Have you tried any of them yet, Erin?  I'm going to make a version of her Zucchini Chocolate Chip Cookies for my boys classes this week.  It's their turn to bring snack to school and they both asked for chocolate chip cookies.  I can't bring myself to send the sugary, full fat version but Kingsolvers plus a little tweeking of my own will make for a perfect, yummy and healthy snack.

    There is definitely more fun to come from this book.  Can't wait to see what you think!
