Mystery hawk... could it be Thunder?

Photos taken Sunday at 40th and Utica... right on the southeastern edge of Kay and Jay's known territory.

Could this be Thunder? Sure a brown tail...

If it's her, she's looking fat and sassy!!!

Bville-does that overlap any other known hawk territories on your map?  When I get a chance I am going to check as many markings as I can from earlier shots of Thunder.

Re: Mystery hawk... could it be Thunder?

Great photos, Russell!  I'm not really sure, though, whether or not that's Thunder.  The only screen caps I have of her (on my flickr page) that show much of anything are from her July 10th, I believe, visit to the KJRH nest... Unforturnately they don't show her front to compare the patterning of her front spots.  But, I do really remember her having eyebrows very similar to Jay's...  Well, for what it's worth, here's the link to my flickr series of screen caps of her July 10 visit:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/27921002@N08/2656210899/in/set-72157605906700008/

Probably we should do some major comparisons between your photos of this young rth, and catgirl's massive library of photos on her flickr site....  I don't have time right now, but will take a look later... Or actually, if catgirl is around, maybe she can weigh in herself... I'm not sure if she's around today...  I gotta go get busy again....  Thanks for these, Russell!!  Definitely a very lovely, robust rth!

EDIT:  I didn't even see other folks' posts until I posted this one!.... Looking at Bville's map with the arrow and pushpin (Bville, you are wonderful!), and then her post with the screencap comparison with catgirl's photos....   I think it just very well could be Thunder (going by the tummy markings) ... Just not exactly sure about the eyebrows.   Could be, though !!!!

Re: Mystery hawk... could it be Thunder?

I do have this shot in my Flickr of two pics Catgirl took and trying to decide if both were Thunder. Also a screen shot I have from June 08 last ones I have of Thunder in the nest area.

    11-18-08                  1-06-09                            6-18-08

I see a great resemblance in all of them.

Just for the record I tried to delete these pics due to it looking like I copied Bvilles and a couple hinted that fact. It won't let me delete them so just to clarify things. The first picture I posted is a shot I made back in Jan (and is on my Flickr) and is in a post made on Jan 7, 09. When Catgirl posted a pic she took and ask if we thought it was Thunder. I made it back then for comparision purposes.
I thought Russells pics look a lot like these

Re: Mystery hawk... could it be Thunder?

Great photo's, but it's really hard to see the difference at that age. Our trio of young hawks' we watch last year, they looked alike except in size, females' were definately different in stature. Though if it should be Thunder or another youngster, Mama an Papa will certainly chase it off, if hawk enter's their nest/territory (comfort) zone. I've seen this on another cam with peregrine's and some may want to return back to old nest site, but parents' have chased them away from nest area.

Re: Mystery hawk... could it be Thunder?

Bville, thanks for the photo comparisons.  I was just thinking I should do the same. I'm glad I checked for your post first. Thanks to your wonderful interactive map, I noticed that the other sighting, right next to Russell's, was where one of Catbird's photos was taken. So given the similarity in appearance and the almost identical location, I'd say the odds are pretty good that it's actually Thunder.

Great photos, by the way, Russell!

Thank you, bobdmac. You took the research the critical further step I inexplicably neglected in my haste--that is, discovering that the 11-18 and 12-25 sightings are the two red balloon markers right next to the push pin for the mystery hawk! (I did check those two text boxes on the map.) An added, heavy duty clue that this most probably may be our Thunder.

Here is the link to the Map, if you want to read the information in those text boxes. Click on the marker, and the text box with info and photos will pop up. http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=109172823967340280330.00045252b55f5647a15e7&z=9

Thanks, Bville, your neglect is inexplicable only because it's so rare. You're an exemplary researcher, as far as I'm concerned.

Re: Mystery hawk... could it be Thunder?

Last night I sent photos and map information about Russell's mystery hawk/Thunder to Donegal, of the Palemaleirregulars blog. Here is her initial reaction, perhaps to be followed by additional thoughts after more study (boldface is mine)--

"Very interesting. Still working on tonight's blog so I looked at the photos but haven't had time to do a complete comparison to decide if I think she is Thunder. (She's a female at any rate, I think. Look at the [fat] ankles and the hawkie head with the lengthened bigger looking beak)"

"Look at feathers (primaries, secondaries, the feathers that reach out and touch things) in Russ[ell's] large photo of mystery bird. See how the tips and even some of the sides of the feathers are worn away.  This bird has been brushing her feathers against buildings, either in Tulsa or elsewhere, not hanging out in trees.  This is an urban Brown-tail, unlikely that it is a new country hawk that's come in for a recent and short visit."

Re: Mystery hawk... could it be Thunder?

Interesting, Bville. I never would have noticed the wear and tear on the feathers. One caution, however. I don't recall that Thunder was ever definitively determined to be a female. Didn't we all just sort of agree to call her one?

Re: Mystery hawk... could it be Thunder?

Awww. Has our Baby Thunder been spotted on the edge of the KJRH territory? So cool!! I do hope there is a playmate nearby. Bobmac I am not sure, but I believe Donnagal made an educated guess of female based on the large ankles. Does not seem quite fair that the female of the species would be the one to be tagged with fat ankles, but alas, it seems so. rc
