The Map Room: Maps and Map Info
A new thread to help consolidate things
"mapp-ish." This thread can serve the new, ongoing
revision/updating process in a quest for clarity and order in the midst of the
increased RTH sightings now further enriching our Forum experience.
Edit notes, 8-7-08:
Some text has been removed from this original post, in light of the three newer
online maps that have been developed. We'll leave a few original maps on this
thread for whatever additional purpose they might serve, or just as a record.
Our Google interactive maps (with sighting locations, text, photos), Tulsa's Redtailed Hawks, Tulsa's Eagles, and Forum Fans are viewable at the following links:

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info
Wonderful. This will make it so much easier to check back to the maps to see what area is being talked about, since our Observation Thread has gotten kind of long!!!
Yes, you moved the dot to a better representation of that back area. The only other possible correction and its one that does not really matter, but I think it was me that a couple of days ago gave the sighting at 45th and Rockford, where I talked about seeing another car following the hawk!!

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info
Oh, sorry about that. I hunted so long for that posting, found it twice, and still got it wrong. (You should have seen the pile of notes I tried to keep straight.) My apologies. I will fix that. :)
PS: Ah, yes, page 173 . I saw tripsqkr's name there in bold, and that's all that registered in my midnight mental mushiness. I hope to get this stuff catalogued somehow. The raw facts to be referenced by the map. PPS: I looked back one more time, and I see that the actual
intersection mentioned was 45th and St. Louis. I'm still mentallly mushy, it appears. (That is virtually the same as
45th and Rockford, I guess?) I think Tripsqkr had mentioned Rockford
once in another post explaining where she lived, and my muddle got muddlier. As
long as that dot is in the right place now, with your name, I'm ready for another muddle.

You have no idea (well, perhaps you do...I hope you do!)... of the fabulousness (probably not a word... been watching too much Project Runway) that you have injected into this hawk forum, Bville, with this mapping project! I have been following along, with delight. Thank you so much, Bville for all your talents and effort! This will add to my pleasure of the experience of Tulsa when we next are out there! Big hug! - socal

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info
Ahem, Socal--either I'm plumb embarrassed, or that's a hot flash I feel coming on. Or both? Hey, as you said recently: each of us has his/her own little heart-shaped niche to settle into here, to do what we enjoy, contributing as we can. I've found one where I'm comfortable, content, and out of middle-aged mischief. Why, my empty nest is now so full of computer print-outs, scribbled notes, and online chat, that it doesn't feel quite so empty anymore. Not that my house cats haven't brightened my world considerably. However, they are scratching their heads over what exactly a bunch of show-off hawks could have on them, in what appears to be a conflict of interest and alienation of affections. Or maybe, it's just a flea or two. The best way to thank me and everyone else, is for you to feel better and return to us in full Socal splendor. And now, to return to Mapstuff--I couldn't get a larger size of the map to post from Flickr into the thread. Too large might have been awkward to manipulate, anyway. But if you copy the map to your pictures, resize and print out, you'll get a better result for some purposes. The text is clearer, for one thing.

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info
A NEW SIGHTING LOCATION: REMINGTON TOWER 7-18-08
This is a re-post of Gunit's sighting from the Observation thread today.
"I saw another hawk today, a really big one. I was driving on the
access road beside I44, approaching 41st street. There is a very tall
building behine the Academy Sports and Outdoor store on 41st street
between Yale and Sheridan. I think it used to be called the Remington
Tower, maybe still is. It is the tallest building in the area,
probably at least 20 stories. While I was driving on the access road I
saw a really big bird soaring over I44 towards the Remington Tower.
There were several small birds dive bombing it. I could see a red tail
in the sun just as the bird flew up to the roof of the Remington Tower
and landed out of sight. I drove around thru Academy parking lot and
stopped and watched for 15 minutes, nothing. It did not fly off the
roof while I was there. That is close to where I work, I can see the
Remington Tower from my window. I will keep watch on this building."
Note: The Map will attempt to respond to this happy news with some sort of suitable acknowedgement, though The Map confesses that it is feeling somewhat inadequate since this "Remington" Hawk chose to stage its sighting at a problematic location (i.e, slightly OFF The Map). Though understandably peeved by said hawk's insensitivity and lack of manners, The Map will not be deterred, and will buck up and seek inspiration at the altar of Technology...and get back to youse guys....

RE: A NEW SIGHTING LOCATION: REMINGTON TOWER, 5810 E. Skelly Drive
Having been satisfactorily bucked up through reflection and an extra-large Diet Coke, The Map returns with increased respect for our far-roving, free-spirited Tulsa redtails. And more importantly, it returns with a brand new little maplet, a second generation to assist in the family charting business (at least until a big SuperMapMart arrives). So let us bestow upon Gunit her very own *red sighting dot [see edit note below] and thereby expand the known territory of our various hawks. There is also another little maplet on the way, who will soon be charting Gunit's earlier hawk sighting out towards the Tulsa Airport. Remington Tower (Web photo is outdated; other buildings have since been erected nearby.)
Edit note: a map of this area has been deleted in favor of the newer Google Maps.

Perfect B'bille, thank you. It is a little strange to see that picture of the Remington Tower. It looks just like that now except it is not that isolated. There has been a lot of construction are the area, it is all built up now. Your talents know no bounds!!!
I will try to get a better identification on the hawk near the airport. I only see it evenings, not mornings. I will try to get closer to the tower with a camera the next time I see it.

Gunit: It is a little strange to see that picture of the Remington Tower. It looks just like that now except it is not that isolated. There has been a lot of construction are the area, it is all built up now. Gunit: I suppose it really is a different effect. I didn't think of that. The photo was an old one, I suspect, from the Tower's early days as a new piece of real estate. (I didn't alter it.) I will be getting that "airport/cell tower" hawk mini-map out pretty soon. (One of these days/weeks/etc., we can get the maps consolidated.) There will also be a revision of the big Map this weekend. Always evolving.

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info
B'ville - The cell phone tower near the airport is right at the north end of Mike Patrick Park (used to be named Dawson). I hope this landmark might help you find where this tower is located. I drove by there this evening, but I hawk was not there.

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info
Hello all fellow Hawkers. My name is Kevin, I am a part-time photographer and enjoy photographing various birds of prey. I have had some good luck in and around Tulsa with Red-Shouldered Hawks, but Red-Tails have proven more difficult.
I have a few spots to add top your map if you are interested. There is a large Red-Shouldered Hawk nest at Morris Park in the parking lot adjacent to the baseball fields just off of Hwy 97 and I-75 in Glenpool. There were three quite large juveniles in the nest as of Memorial Day weekend, but I suspect there are fully out of the nest by now as they were just starting to hover at that time. The adults were in constant food-fetching mode when I was observing them bringing in several good sized grass or garter snakes and finally a squirrel to feed the brood.
I have also seen a good sized Red Tail where Mingo Road dead ends into 76th Street North. I have only managed to photograph this bird once.
I have had some luck with Red-Shouldered Hawks during breeding season out on old Hwy 51 adjacent to the Arkansas River Eagle Sanctuary in spring time. They tend to get tunnel vision during this time.
There is a nice large Goshawk that inhabits the Beaver Pond area at Lake Yahola but he is very skittish and does not tolerate the camera aimed at him. No shots of this bird to date. I ahve also seen him at the bird watching stand north of Oxley.
Lake Yahola is also a great place to watch Ospreys and Eagles during their migration through Oklahoma in early and late winter.
I am very interested in the urbanized Hawks that your group has spotted. I look forward to visiting these sites and getting some good images. Fore those interesteed, my bird images can be seen at http://www.flickr.com/photos/kcactionphoto/sets/72157605942673674/

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info
Welcome actionphoto, your pictures are very good! I enjoyed looking at them. Have you ever observed eagles below Keystone Dam from November thru May each year? They have a wonderful observation platform on the north side of the river directly across from the nesting area. There are some photo opportunities there. The eagles fish from the river right in front of you. Really cool!!! Again, welcome. We look forward to more pictures from you.
Where did you hear about this forum?

Kevin, are we interested? Gang....? I hear a rising chant
out there--"Goshawks, and ospreys and bears...Oh, MY!" (Well, we'll
pass on the bears.) You're not the only one who has "had some good
luck" around these parts--it's our good fortune that you
stopped by tonight to say, "Howdy." To which we reply, "Howdy" and "Boy,
howdy!" We appreciate the gifts you bear--your photos, your experience, and your acquaintance.
Glad to meet you.
