    The Magic Kitten

So my wife and I are out eating dinner at Tulsa's busiest intersection, 71st and Memorial. Place is called "The Elephant Bar," and it's outstanding for any of you in the area who need a place to try.

Anyway, we come out and as we're heading to the car, she spots something moving...

I crouch down and sure enough, it's a kitten -- a tiny one, heading away as fast as its little legs can run.

I try to circle around when it gets to the last car in the row -- and the little twirp immediately heads straight up, into the engine block of the car.

Okay so now we're stuck. MEW! MEW! MEW! MEW! from inside someone's hood, meanwhile, it's 9:30 at night, no one else around, and again we're right next to an extremely busy road. And oh yeah, she's crouched in an engine. So many ways for this kitty to get killed...

After 15 minutes or so of coaxing and trying to fit under the car far enough to reach her, I went inside the restaurant to see if I could possibly find the owner of the car.

Amazingly, I did manage to find the owner, one of the waitresses. She grabbed her keys, and we headed outside... to find my wife standing there with the kitten in her arms

She had "meowed" at the kitten, and believe it or not the little rascal came out and walked right up to her.

So we took her home, and she went into quarantine (we have 5 other cats). First thing yesterday morning she went to the vet, and got a clean bill of health (she did have roundworms but they treated her). She's clear for Feline leukemia and HIV. And no fleas! (WHEW)

All of our pets (including 2 huge dogs) are foundlings. We call the cats our "karma kits." Well this one was definitely a karma kit...

For dinner, Maggie had the "Jamaican Mojo Salad," so the name was obvious... and here's a couple of photos of "Mojo." For a feral kitten she's unbelievably sweet and loves to cuddle, so we're tickled to death.

    Re: The Magic Kitten

Awww, how cute is that!  And you adopted her and just didn't walk away.

I am now up to four cats myself.  Was not in the plans....

Last September, I adopted a black & white male, who was dumped in the country on my boss, a person highly allergic, with 5 hunting dogs.  I loaned him a carrier and a can of cat food, and took the cat sight unseen.  Luckily, the cat isn't wild or feral, very loving.  He was about four months old at that time.  Sad, that people do this.

This January, after the ice storm, I noticed a white cat at my office building at 71st & Lewis.  I could not approach the cat.  It was starved, and it was soooo cold out.  I started leaving food three times a day.

I became quite a novelty, because I would have to put half of myself into the shrubbery looking for the cat.  People would come out and say, oh yeah, the cat has been here before Christmas.

After two weeks of steady feeding, I still could not approach and catch the cat.  So I rented a trap, baited it one evening at a regular feeding time, and in 15 minutes, he was caught.  Very angry, hissing, spitting, clawing.  I did not know what I had just got myself into. OMG.

He spent the night in the cage with food and water in a bedroom.  The next morning, I came in dressed to do battle, if necessary, and let him out of the cage.  Opened the cage, and out walked this loving little white cat.  The vet guaged him to be about six months old.  I posted on several sites and around the office building and noone claimed him.  So now he is number four.

    Funny, how they find us.

Exactly, that's why we call them Karma Kits. :)

Mojo's the 10th cat we've rescued in the last 14 years or so... plus the two dogs.

Life just wouldn't be the same without them Paradise

    Re: The Magic Kitten

Wonderful stories.  I am a cat lover and have 5.  We had a cat, who adopted us one new years eve. She was a orange tabby with her front claws removed and had already been spayed.  Several weeks later we noticed a beautiful calico female hanging around the front yard.  We started feeding her outside and finally coaxed her inside.  After spending two days behind the wood stove she finally came out.  Low and behold she started getting fatter and fatter, pregnant!!  In April she gave birth to five beautiful kittens.  We kept three and gave two away to good homes.  That was almost three years ago and we couldn't be happier with our five friends.  Cats are so special!!  Almost as special as Thunder.

    Re: The Magic Kitten

Russell, your story had me grinning ear to ear. What a great story, and such an apt and darling name, "Mojo". Also, walks and Gunit, I loved your stories, as well. Thanks for those!

Russell, I couldn't agree more with the karma idea about these loving creatures finding us. My brother had to give up his beloved boxer when he moved recently, but very soon after a kitten "adopted" him and is now his trusty new pal. Our own "Honey" (daughter-dog) has such a strong and loving spirit, she drew me all the way from Vista to Encinitas (about 10 miles) to check out the dogs one day on an impulse. We had not planned on adopting a pet until just that day, when I was so drawn to the shelter there. I enjoyed all the dogs there that day, but fell immediately in love with Honey (she had no name at that time yet, but it came right out of me, right away when I saw her). I left there, thinking that maybe... MAYBE... I might broach the subject of adoption and, maybe drag my guys back to see her later... Nope, the heartstrings had me get off at the very next offramp, turn around and get back on that freeway going back down to the shelter. I had to see her one more time. Later, to make a long story short (or longer... ) I whisked our son off straight from school at the end of his schoolday (then in 3rd grade), and made a beeline with him straight back to the shelter. Bingo. Love at first sight for our son, as well... o.k. Now we had to strategize getting his daddy down there after he got home from work... No even better, we desperately called him to meet us there, since it was about half way home for him, right on his way. So, after taking our son home to complete homework, etc. I drove down there a third time that day (2nd time for our son...) and met hubby. Another bingo. All three of us had to have her in our family. We had to wait of course until they had the vet there check her out, etc., and usually they have to spay her first (which the customer pays for) before you can take her home. But we were all so desperate to get her out of there and bring her home with us, they finally agreed to let her go, after having us sign an agreement to have her spayed within a certain time period, which we did.
Post script: She was the very last one left of a whole litter of shep/labs that had been brought in a few months prior. All the others had been more of a white-ish color with her being the only honey-colored one. I'm betting she was the best natured. She's been so wonderful... Truly the best dog I've ever had. Karma? Absolutely.

    Re: The Magic Kitten

For over 50 years my life has been blessed by rescued strays. Friends swear there is a sign on my lawn, visible only to cats - saying All Welcome Here! And they have come. Including the unexpected deliveries of babies, I have had as many as 11 cats at a time, and as few as my current 3 elderly cats. There is something very unique about a cat who is rescued, and mojo is exactly the right word for it!

    Re: The Magic Kitten

Thank you Russell that is a very entertaining story! Although I've had a few cats in my life I have always been the stray dog magnet!

Socal it is great to have a loving family that agreed with your pull on your heartstrings. I am really glad to hear Honey is doing better on her medication.

All of you are such wonderful people.

    Mojo update

Well Mojo continues to thrive and the other cats have begun adjusting to the idea of a new Presence. Gabrielle, the youngest female and the Alpha F, tolerates her with no problem. Even Granny Duchess (as she's now dubbed) will put up with the baby. Duchess has always been the most paranoid, aloof cat we've had -- and we've had her about 16 years now :)

She sidled up to Cairo (a huge male) today and he put a paw on her as if to hold her in place, gave her a couple of licks (tasting or bathing?) then nipped at the back of her neck. For which he got a sonic reprimand and a swat on the flank as he ran for it! He didn't hurt her at all, she didn't even squeak, but can't have him using teeth on the baby.

Damien, beta male, wants nothing to do with her. He'll hiss from clear across the room.

Angelica, the "prima donna" who wants nothing to do with any of the other cats hasn't seemed to even take notice of Mojo's existence yet.

Mojo remains in "partial isolation" in the yoga room, we only take her out for supervised romps. Still a little small to roam free, don't want her getting stuck somewhere. We don't think any of the other cats would ever hurt her but why take the chance? A couple more days and we'll probably cut her lose... so her reign of terror can begin!!! Muwhaahahahah!
