I just found this on the net on red-tailed hawks' guarded territory:

Red-tailed hawks are extremely territorial. Hunting, nesting, and mating all take place on the same guarded territory, which can be as large as 3 square miles. Females primarily defend the nesting areas, while males defend the hunting grounds. An ideal hawk territory should include tall trees for nesting or perching, and open grasslands so the hawks may view prey from above.

I just got caught up reading everything. wow, several visitations to the nest, nest maintenance, and now this very thought-provoking sighting of two hawks sky-dancing with one another, near KJRH, and another hawk soaring nearby (?!?) by Russell and Shawn Brett... hmmmmm.... Yes, Russell, eeet eeeez veeeeeeeerrrrdy eeenterrrestink !!!!....... Thanks, and high fives to you and Shawn for the report!!!

Beloved Team Forum: Thanks so much, for all the vigils, posts, screen caps, and video, you guys. It's really amazing to see that so many of you are still hanging in there for the rest of us. Big hugs!

I am very much involved right now in family, home and hearth matters and activities for the unforeseeable future, but know I am thinking of all of you, and Kay, Jay, Thunder... sallyls, regarding your withdrawal symptoms from your Team Forum friends: Take two hugs, and post us in the morning..... That should help !!! CamFan I miss you guys, too!!! (I think I said that already.... Bears repeating )... And Gunit and Workaholic: huge high fives to you for your boots-on-the-ground reports! Gunit, were it possible, I'd bring you an In-N-Out burger whilst camping out on KJRH's lawn.... And to all of you, more hugs... I'll try to check in again at some point.....

Let me add further to the mysterious plot. As I pulled into the parking lot maybe 30 minutes ahead of the storm over by Langenheim Park yesterday, there were 4 hawks. Two sky dancing, as best I could tell and two nearby just kind of floating around on the winds. They were far enough apart and high enough up I could not tell Adults or last years fledglings, however, my thoughts were they were Gwen and Lancelot plus Sebastian and Viola. Is it possible that they would let the kids hang out now and again the second year as long as they don't approach the nest? rc

Russell-That is indeed exciting and interesting! I hope it was our happy family. Given they are not really defending anest with chicks at the moment I don't know if they would recognize and tolerate their Thunder from last year or not at this point. It is an exciting thought.

Regarding workaholic's post, I think it would be unusual for 4 "adult" hawks to hang out in the sky together. I wonder if they might have been vultures, who are commonly seen soaring quite high on the winds, gently rocking back and forth, often in groups of 3 or more. Very interesting observations indeed! Fun, fun, fun as the drama and mystery grows! :)

Yeah!! Wonderful Russell. I have had the same thoughts as you have too!! You can tell they have been doing something to the nest also. A third hawk? I wonder what that means?

I went outside and we could see 2 hawks sky dancing!

I tried to get pix but they're so high you can barely tell they're hawks.

In any case, I wanted to let everyone know the drama continues... stay tuned!
