Bobdmac, I don’t mind being corrected at all. I just reported what I saw. I’m glad someone else can fill in the blanks. I figured it is best to make a notation of something so you can look for it on your video achieves (no pressure). If you still have video from Saturday, could you please post a clip of Kay sitting on the nest with her head lying over the snow bank blinking her eye? I believe this happened in the evening time. I know it is an odd request but that was as miserable as I’ve ever seen her look and it was inspiring to see her persevere.
Also, good news on the home front…..I have seen both redtail hawks at the nest close to my house. They are sitting on eggs. I only know this because of comparing their behavior to what I see on KJRH’s website. I’ve only seen them doing a switch out one time and I look up at the nest often. The hawk that is off of the nest is no where to be seen. This is my opinion (for what it is worth) of why Jay leaves the area and stays gone so long: he hunts way away from the nest site because after the eggs hatch he will be staying closer and why kill everything around the nest before that happens. Last year, when I was observing the hawks at my house after their eggs hatched, I could spot a hawk hunting (or waiting for prey) almost every time I stepped out the door. Now, I rarely ever see a hawk and when I do it isn't hunting.
Thanks for getting and posting the info from the expert. I guess the next week or two will be interesting. Thanks, Kay, for the flip out, NOT!
