appropriate helmet, the WW I leather flying ace type (maybe with
goggles) or the white plastic 60's era with the flip down visor.

bobdmac: I believe I'll cast my vote for the brown leather flying ace helmet (matches the plumage, don't you know) & goggles (i.e., bugshield), and suggest the addition of a jaunty scarf, for
fashion's sake.
Bville, are you familiar with the comic strip "Shoe"? All of the characters in the strip are birds and you've just described the outfit of one of them, the town's newspaper photographer who wears a brown helmet, goggles, and a long scarf. Here's the website for the strip:
