Thank you all. I look forward to participating. I am having serious computer issues. I just hope it will last long enough to join you all.

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to talk, squawk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects

Always good to see a few of you checking in and posting.  Hopefully soon one of us will spot a hawk somewhere working on its nest.
Yesterday morning I spotted one of the ArtDeco RT's on another historical Art Deco building a few blocks northeast of the previous sightings.  Built in 1929, the Warehouse Market Building (925 S. Elgin) was originally a farmers market on the famous Route 66.  In 1993 Home Depot bought and preserved the building, spending $1 million on repairs.  It now contains a few small shops and a Mazzio's Pizza (another opportunity for dumpster diving! ie the rats it attracts!)

As I was watching this hawk, its mate circled by from the west, perching briefly nearby on another cell tower before circling off to the east.
A few more of this redtail amd also photos from this past week of another visit to the Sooner Lake eagles at my flickr photostream - www.flickr.com/photos/cheryls_camera

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving. I wish I could be with my family and friends in Alabama. I can't wait to see if Kay and Jay will make us thankful this, and the coming, year!

I've just joined. In the past, bville has posted my news for me. And I appreciate it, but I figured it was time to get off my duff and join. I follow the nesting bald eagle pair at the Norfolk Botanical Garden in Virginia and I go to the releases of rehabbed raptors from the Wildlife Center of Virginia. But now that I've joined this forum, I wonder if I've missed the boat... The last post is 11-23. Does anyone still post here?

Hey, Chris...welcome! Yes, we're still here, and hawks still fly over Tulsa. :)  Observations have just been rather few and far between lately. This thread posts info on raptors other than the KJRH redtails; and Kay and Jay: 2nd Season follows, well, Kay and Jay. There hasn't been much Hawk Cam attention to the Tower nest lately, though we anticipate that picking up before long. So again, welcome, and please do browse through the various threads. We also have some Google maps that post locations of redtail and eagle sightings in the Greater Tulsa area. And there is also a map showing the locations of Forum followers.

Yay! I didn't miss the boat! bville, I haven't heard from you in ages. I hope you are well! I actually thought of this forum because two of our photographers took some fantastic RTH pics the other day. We have a RTH that hangs out at the gardens. You can tell it's the same one because one of it's talons points sideways when it is perched. I can't post the pics here because I don't have permission to distribute their pics. But here are links directly to what they posted. In the second and third pic of the first post, you can see the crooked talon on the right foot that identifies this particular hawk.

Exciting news coming up. This Tuesday the Wildlife Center of Virginia is coming to my city to release a Peregrine Falcon. I already let my boss know I'd be taking some time from work. The lady that sent the email announcement has been at the WCV for 8 years and has only seen a few Peregrines, so this is going to be special. And I don't even have to travel to see it! I'll post some pics and video!

Welcome Chris7 and I am looking forward to your posts about the Peregrine release!  How exciting that will be! Where is the release site?  I too watched the Norfolk cam thought I cam in about two weeks after hatching I think, and I think it quite fascinating that Azalea hasn't strayed too far from home. Things are quiet this time of year, not a lot of action, so we welcome your input!

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to talk, squawk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects

Thanks for the welcome Sally. I went to the release today. It was at the Grandview Nature Preserve in Hampton, VA. It was cold and we trekked back a little bit into the Preserve and got my shoes muddy. But it was worth it. When the Falcon was let go, it went in the direction it was released (north?) and then it circled and headed south and kept going until it was a speck. Here's a pic. I try to take pics with one hand while continuing to shoot video with the other, so this is what I got for a still pic...

Here's links to video. The first is intro with Ed Clark, the president of the Wildlife Center of Virginia. The second is a bit more with Ed, then the release.

Great news on the eagle cam. They expect it to be working on January 4th. Fingers crossed!

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to talk, squawk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects

I replied last night, but it never showed up, so maybe I messed it up. I'll give it another shot.

Thanks for the welcome Sally. The Peregrine release was good. It was at the Grandview Nature Preserve in Hampton VA. I've never seen one of them before. It was cold and I got my shoes muddy, but it was well worth it. I only managed one still photo that's worth sharing:

Here's the video links. I broke it down into two parts. The first part is Ed Clark (Co-Founder and President of the Wildlife Center of Virginia, pictured above) talking about this particular bird and the work that is done at the Wildlife Center of Virginia. The second part is Ed talking about a recent court case where he testified against some people that were killing eagles and other birds and selling their parts, then it goes into the release of the Peregrine Falcon. I lost track when it was in flight because it went behind another person, then I couldn't pick it up again even though it circled around. Oh well. We watched it until it was a tiny speck -- heading South.
    Video part 1 (9:47): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_ynNodA7pE
    Video part 2 (7:01): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa9OrS_fJHs

Good news on the eagle cam. They plan to have it running again on January 4th!

Welcome, Chris. I have been here for a while now. However, I don't post or visit as often as I should. I hope to become more active soon. The Peregrine release information and videos were great. Thanks for the post. This is a great forum. The members are so nice, genuine and informational. Have fun. Your input is, and will be, appreciated and welcomed.

Hey wings2c!  Happy New Year!  Hope you are doing better...
Welcome to the Forum, Chris!  Thanks for sharing with us about the Peregrine release!   I bet it's incredible to see in person.

Speaking of such ...  I thought of all of you when this was going on last year, and kept meaning to post about it, and now it's going on again ... So this time I'm being more diligent and carrying through with my earlier intentions.   For anybody visiting Southern California this time of year, every Saturday morning there's a "Hawk Watch" out in Ramona (in San Diego County).   Quite honestly, I've yet to actually make it out there for one, but I hope to get the visit in this year.   Here's the link to the most recent San Diego Union Tribune article about it:

    Cheers, Hawk-Forumers!
    Later...

With increasing frequency in recent weeks, the Franklin Institute Redtails in Philadelphia have been observed in and around their nest. You can follow their activities and find photos and commentary by John Blakeman, among others, through these sites--a blog and the Franklin Hawkaholics Facebook page (listed also in the Resources thread):

Bville, thank you sooo much!   I just sneeked in a quick read of the latest updates on each of those links, and I'm sooo excited for them!   My hope is that we will have more full and lengthy views of Kay and Jay's KJRH nest very soon!!!   We're waaay behind those folks !!!   As one of those bloggers said of the KJRH cam ...   "The whole world is watching"...   and waiting ... and waiting...  No pressure, or anything, Russell Wink ...  By the way, Russell, I hope you had a good rest over the New Year's break, and enjoyed yourself!   You deserve it!  You work hard, and we all appreciate that.  Again, Happy New Year Russell, and KJRH !!!
(I posted this same reply on the Resources thread...  Bears repeating, no ?!?)
