Fledgling RTH in Portland, Oregon branches to Fire escape railing!  If anyone has a cleaner picture and can catch it up there please let me know, I'd like to send it on to donnegal. http://www.kgw.com/raptorcam/?nvid=226982&live=yes

I had posted the incorrect picture, sorry.

Here's another capture by Sallyls of a Portland parent beside one branching baby. The other is below. (Maybe the time of day accounts for the different atmospheric color in this one.)

Sallyls here is what I captured about 45 minutes ago. It's hard to make out but the branching baby, with his/her back to us has it's head between it's wings preening. I just missed capturing both of them on the window sill!
In this one it's preening under it's wing. I'll keep trying, just don't think the captures come out real clear.

These captures are from the Franklin Institute on 5/29/2009 - they have the Red Tail triplets.
    http://www2.fi.edu/hawknest.php

Baby #1, far right has taken squirrel away from parent (in front), while siblings look on...

Baby #2 gets in there and grabs for a bite...

Baby #3, far left shows an interest but can't quite get close enough....

    To be continued...

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to talk, squawk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects

And the story continues at the Franklin Institute:

Meanwhile, the parent leaves the nest as #2 and #3 watch its departure....

Baby #3 gives it his best shot at grabbing some squirrel..

Then baby #2, in the center, comes forward and takes the rest of the squirrel away from #1...

And turns around and eats it in the upper hand corner of the nest box (from left to right #3, #2,and #1)...

    The End

    Food Fight 6/05/2009  1:30 PM

The Scene: The Philadelphia Franklin Institute
Parent has just dropped off a meal.

#1 on the right is protecting it, "it's all mine"...

Something distracts both chicks and the meal is unguarded behind #1's feet...

#2 reaches in behind #1's feet and grabs the meal...

Tug of war with food ensues...

#2 gets the bounty and assumes a protective stance and actually nudges #1 away with his extended wing

#2 retreats to the far corner to eat the spoils, #1 can do nothing but look on

HI GUYS really miss all of you and the chatter here. We have been really busy but I check whats going on when I can. Love all of you and your updates. I really miss Kay, Jay and Thunder a lot.

I know some have kept up with the Portland Hawks. Well I just checked the website and didn't see any of them anywhere. I found this post though:

Both fledglings have now suffered collisions and are recovering at the Audubon Wildlife Care Center. The first came into the Care Center on Tuesday after flying into a car. the second go caught in a gust of wind during the storm last evening. Pedestrians saw it slam into a building window and drop to the ground. Portland Police recovered the hawk and delivered it to Dove Lewis Emergency Hospital (which accepts injured wildlife after hours on behalf of Audubon.) Dove Lewis care for the hawk overnight and we picked-up the bird this morning. He is currently being examined by our veterinarian. If all goes well, hopefully we will be able to return both birds to their parents this weekend.

The following are pictures of the second fledgling during examination and banding this afternoon (Fri June 6):

Well I hope this post doesn't show up twice but it isn't showing now so I am doing it again. Here is an update from this evening (Sat)on the Portland Hawks

    Fledglings Successfully Returned to Nest

    7:58 PM Sat, Jun 06, 2009

We returned the fledglings to the nest late this afternoon. Mom flew back and forth several times as they were being released. The youngsters scurried the the corner of the nest as soon as they were released from their carriers and within minutes were up on the railings flapping and calling. I left a bunch of food in the nest for them (dead mice and quail) so they should have plenty to tie them over until the parents bring in food. The nest is pretty disgusting--full of all kinds of junk including bits of rubber, foam and insulation. There is even a small mirror encased in plastic that they seem to have carried in.

The fledglings by the way are a boy and a girl. They are actually pretty close in size making it hard to tell gender over the camera, but their weight and foot size are diagnostic..so we have one of each.

We watched from the ground for awhile after the release. Mom remained in the area but did not enter the nest. it may take her a little while given the strange events that transpired this afternoon. However, she will eventually resume feeding.

    Franklin RTH nest update:
Yesterday, one of the fledglings had to be retrieved from an awkward ground location. It is apparently unhurt, just needs some assistance. See news story and photos here:
