    VERY interesting development...

    Happy Friday!

Just a few minutes ago our art director, Shawn Brett popped his head in the newsroom... "Come outside! Now!"

I went outside and we could see 2 hawks sky dancing!

Then...the plot thickens, as we see a THIRD hawk soaring around nearby.

So what's this all mean? Could there be hope for another clutch? Does K or J have a rival? Was it Thunder, joining the family for reasons unknown?

I tried to get pix but they're so high you can barely tell they're hawks.

In any case, I wanted to let everyone know the drama continues... stay tuned!

    Kay? Jay? Thunder?

Thank you, Russell, for the news and the photo. Thanks, especially to Mr. Brett for hustling you outside. Hope springs eternal.

I am so excited, perplexed, but excited.  I will be there this weekend to see what I can see.  Do you think I could camp out on the front lawn of the station????

    Thanks Russell

Yeah!! Wonderful Russell. I have had the same thoughts as you have too!! You can tell they have been doing something to the nest also. A third hawk? I wonder what that means?

I am sorry but animals do not know what month of the year it is.

    Thank you so very much!

    Big Smile

Let me add further to the mysterious plot. As I pulled into the parking lot maybe 30 minutes ahead of the storm over by Langenheim Park yesterday, there were 4 hawks. Two sky dancing, as best I could tell and two nearby just kind of floating around on the winds. They were far enough apart and high enough up I could not tell Adults or last years fledglings, however, my thoughts were they were Gwen and Lancelot plus Sebastian and Viola. Is it possible that they would let the kids hang out now and again the second year as long as they don't approach the nest? rc

Next, Jay gets amnesia and forgets he's a hawk.

Russell-That is indeed exciting and interesting!  I hope it was our happy family. Given they are not really defending anest with chicks at the moment I don't know if they would recognize and tolerate their Thunder from last year or not at this point. It is an exciting thought.

Regarding workaholic's post, I think it would be unusual for 4 "adult" hawks to hang out in the sky together. I wonder if they might have been vultures, who are commonly seen soaring quite high on the winds, gently rocking back and forth, often in groups of 3 or more.  Very interesting observations indeed!  Fun, fun, fun as the drama and mystery grows!  :)

Well, My My...I don't dare not check in everyday. Russell, thank you for the update. Very, very interesting.

Bob, you are too funny. Maybe one of the TV stations will pick them up and replace one of the other useless soaps!

I can't wait to hear more and hear from those of you who are fortunate enough to keep up with them in the area.

    Socal...my thoughts are with you...

Thank you, Russell, for keeping us posted!!!  I would think that Kay and Jay may be doing a mating dance!  And, even if they aren't, they are enjoying themselves, which makes me very happy!!!

    Re: VERY interesting development...

I just found this on the net on red-tailed hawks' guarded territory:

Red-tailed hawks are extremely territorial. Hunting, nesting, and mating all take place on the same guarded territory, which can be as large as 3 square miles. Females primarily defend the nesting areas, while males defend the hunting grounds. An ideal hawk territory should include tall trees for nesting or perching, and open grasslands so the hawks may view prey from above.
