Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

8:59 The eggs continue to sit alone in the nest. No Kay or Jay.

I wonder if they will remove the eggs, or just leave them? I think we can now say the nest is officially abandoned?

Bville...thank you again. You have a kind, sensitive and realistic way of putting things into perspective. And, it is comforting to all of us who read your writings. The article was wonderful. Thank you for posting the link.

9:35 a.m. Camera tour of nest and tower environs, no hawks in sight. Closeup on pretty little eggs....lying alone in the sun...sleep tight.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

9:00 am  Spot a hawk in a tree at 36th and St. Louis.  I park and try to find an angle to see who it is, as their back is to the sun, and lots of tree branches in the way.  Just as I get under the hawk, it takes off.  I snap a few pictures as it circles overhead and then disappears over buildings to the south.  I did not have any more sightings on my way back home.
Tis Jay and he has a full crop.

And we still do not know why sycamores have played such an important but obscure role in the hawks lives.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

Eggs at 9:36 a.m  The one egg appears darker than usual on its brown-splotched portion, but it may(?) simply have a shadow there, as well, similar to the other egg's.

Thanks for those new photos, Catgirl. Nothing like starting the week with a new crop!

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

Thank you so much catgirl for the wonderful pics of Jay, and for your persistence in finding him. It so good to see him looking so healthy and majestic! In an earlier post you were talking about all the restaurants in the area of the nest, and I too wondered why there would be a prey, (rodents as well as pigeons) in the area. My other thought was the horrific ice storm of Dec 2007, what impact on nature did it leave (besides the destruction of so many trees?)

Bville, your post was so elequently put, and timely.

Workaholic, thank you for your on-the-ground reporting also.

EDITED to add: Observer, thank you for the screen captures of Jay yesterday morning, as that may be the last we see of him on/near the nest for this season.

Thanks, and welcome, CamFan. Looking forward to any reports you have about redtails in your area--or anywhere else, for that matter!

10:07 Extreme closeup of the eggs. As pretty as they are, I wish we could see the entire platform, just in case Kay or Jay pay a visit...

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

    Hi all, just a question.

Amazing pictures as usual Catgirl. Does Jay not have a belly band, or am I just not seeing it in the picture?

Wings, Jay's belly band is a lot lighter than Kay's. That's one of the best ways of distinguishing them.

    Catgirl-

Again, thanks so much for the photos. They really provide a valuable context to all the speculation we will be engaged in.
