Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

Thank you so much Catgirl!!! This is perfect!! I am so glad you did this.

    Big Smile+50

First off early of the morning of March 8 before sunrise there was a visitor in the nest. He seemed to be staying out of the wind lifting his little head and looking around like he didn't want to get caught there at first light he flew off to the south (right). It was about an hour after that before Kay arrived at the nest.

After that was Catgirls wonderful day out!!

The 10pm news that night kept announcing they had an update on Kay and Jay. The video of that was very rough. The morning newscast (Mon. March 9) replayed the video of Kay standing up and showing the egg.

A copy of the video on my Flickr

This was the picture on the evening newscast when Kay first stood up.

    MONDAY March 9:

At 11:18am Kay was sitting on her new egg and looked at the camera giving it her famous "The Look"

Then there is the "changing of the guard" like a dutiful Daddy Jay carefully flies in and Kay hops up:

Kay carefully steps out of the way

    and Jay takes over

Now hopefully there will be egg #2 very shortly

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

You know, I had read that Kay probably wouldn't incubate/brood right away but would probably wait for the second egg to do some serious sitting. To me, this sure looks like the kind of egg-sitting that hatched last year's eggs.

If in fact she's really incubating the egg now, it will likely hatch and grow faster than the next egg (or two). So I'm wondering if this will limit the second egg's chance of fledging, and whether we're in for a repeat of last year's experience, when we lost Spirit.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

I drove by the nest a little while ago - in the past hour.  Jay was sitting on one of his favorite perches - on the pole right under the satellite dish at the back of the nest.  So he is close - for whenever Kay crooks her big talon at him and says "Come 'er"

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

Or could that mean the second egg will arrive real soon!

    Smile

You do make a good point Bobdmac I guess time will tell. This is some serious sitting and the temp. are extremely warm today so protecting from the cold is not an issue ...yet!

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

I finally can watch her through that Quicktime Player, and the link from bobdmac (mms://a1401.l3310357400.c33103.n.lm.akamaistream.net/D/1401/33103/v0001/reflector:57400) plugged into a Firefox browser window. Yay!!!

6:01 p.m. She is sitting sweetly with her fanny on 9 (at the bar to left of nest) and her head facing 3. She was nodding a bit a few minutes ago when I first got her image up and running. Now she's cocking her head around and looking about her. Such a cute little mama. She's craning her neck a bit to look out west and south west, northwest,... and back again.

Socal, I've noticed, in scrubbing back and forth through the video, that Kay keeps a constant eye out (as does Jay, when he's on the nest), looking all around her. The eagles do the same thing, seemingly always on the lookout for potential threats.

Then they must just hate nodding off!!!! She's just awakened, in fact as I type this and looked startled that she dozed... Then proceeded to doze off again... Poor Kay... She must be exhausted!

I've captured a little of her struggle against sleep, and I'll post the video as soon as it finishes transcoding.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: The Big Sit

At 6:25 Kay stood up and stretched.  The wind is quite strong and you can see it whistling through the feathers on her chest, head and wings.  It is going to be cold up on that tower after the front moves through.
