Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

I found this site through a search for tulsa hawks.

The very thing that sparked my interst in birds of prey was the Audobon Society's Eagle Watch at Keystone Dam. Very first time there a nice juvenile Bald Eagle soared in over the dam and checked out the small crowd. I did not have near enough lens to shoot the far sid eof the river where the adults were roosting so I drove across the dam and found old 51. It was a mine field of huge potholes and downed trees form the ice storm. I pulled in at Swift Park and had a slightly better view of the south river bank but they were still more than a 1/4 mile away. It was then that an adult Bald swooped in from the north and took a fish and flew straight over me. I never got one good image of him. In the following weeks I went out to old 51 and Avery drive and got some decent images.

A friend of mine told me about the Ospreys at Yahola and I was thoroughly amazed by these birds. While they are not quite as large in the body as an eagle, their wings are almost the same size. They are very active for the weeks they are here and will constantly take sand bass out of the lake. The resident hawks do not care for their invasion and there have been sightings of hawks and ospreys sparring even though they do not share the same food supply. I personally have not seen this.

I am interested in the urbanized hawks as they will be a little more patient with a person in their space than birds that haunt the woods. The pair of Red-Shouldereds at Morris park did not seem to mind all the attention they and their hawklings got during a baseball tournament when I spotted their nest. Its only about 30 feet from the ground and the juveniles were easy to watch with the naked eye. Those youngsters were voracious. On Memorial Day I went out to photograph them I saw the parents bring a couple of small snakes and finally a squirrel. They took no time in devouring them. It was truly inspiring to listen to the adult's cries as the circled above the trees and hear them whooshing overhead as the flew into the nest through the limbs.

Look forward to getting some shots in town

    kcactionphoto:
I have also seen a good sized Red Tail where Mingo Road dead ends into 76th Street North. I have only managed to photograph this bird once.

How recent was your last Red Tail sighting at this locaton?  Just asking for potential mapping purposes.

Saw this bird on July 4th. I am pretty sure his range covers most of the forested region and turf farms north of Mohawk Park.

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info

Excellent, Kevin. So glad that this was a Red Tail and a recent sighting. And ID photos, to boot! Perfect. Now we're talkin'. Gunit, or anyone in Tulsa--seems to me that this sighting might possibly maybe could be hope so wannabe in the general northern area of Gunit's "airport/cell phone tower" sighting (N. Yale between Apache & Pine). Mohawk Park and beyond would seem to be a great hunting area for a hawk (as long as it stayed out of the Zoo grounds there. :)

Thanks also for posting these 2 specific photos on the Forum. Now that you/we have this particular RTH to report, should you ever get up that way again and have another sighting (or any other RTH, for that matter), you can best report such good fortune (the details) on the Forum's "Post-Fledge Observation Thread"--where we try to gather our RTH sightings and sighting-related info. As a matter of fact, if you'd care to "fly on over" to the Observation thread and move or copy there your above RTH sighting post with the 2 photos, you'll be right alongside our other intrepid observers/photogs. As for the Map Room, I'll get your sighting on the forthcoming map revision (glad I waited until today so that we can see the very latest sightings--yours included.) Actually, your sighting and Gunit's will be on a new mini-map, AKA Maplet. This map is one which will show a northern area of Tulsa not shown on the admittedly area-challenged main Map. We hope to produce improved mapping resources in good time (well, as soon as we can, given the need for personal pacing, techno-planning, and suggestions from all of you. But we will get there.) For now, we have some working maps that should suffice.

We also have a thread called "Raptor Rap." Here we talk about (well, the thread title explains the purpose)--other raptors and relevant info/photos. You'll find owls, peregrines, kestrels, eagles, etc., over there. You would be at home there, too, with your range of experience. Check it out sometime.

    Again, welcome.

Kevin: Thank you so much for sharing your lovely photos (and sightings/observations) with us! These two are so peaceful, sunset-lit as they are. We are so glad to have you on board.

    NEW MAPS:  NORTH TULSA SIGHTINGS

    AERIAL VIEW:
    updated 7-24-08

    (basic map is from Mapquest)
Edit Note: 7-24:  placement of A & B has been switched for consistency with the Street View, below.
    Edit Note
7-22: ID on Sighting A is now designated as an Adult.

    STREET VIEW:  posted 7-21-08  5:00 P.M. CDT

    (basic map is from Mapquest)

    NOTE:
In his posts on this thread, kcactionphoto mentioned that there have been winter osprey sightings at Lake Yahola. Eagles and goshawks frequent the area, as well. Although we aren't mapping non-RTH sightings, since this mini-map is at hand, you can note for yourselves the location of Lake Yahola for reference. Especially, since KC went on to say: "The resident hawks do not care for their [osprey] invasion and there have been sightings of hawks and ospreys sparring even though they do not share the same food supply. I personally have not seen this."
    (boldface is mine)
Edit note: Symbols edited for consistency with main MAP

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info

Thank you, Observer. Just something I can do for the Forum, as you and so many get out there on the streets, in the parks, etc., with your cameras in tow. The great photos and personal accounts! And others have fine hawk knowledge and lore to impart--both hands-on and/or researched over the years. It's a pleasure for all of us--talkers, stalkers, photogs, lurkers, readers, writers, Comet, Cupid, Donder.....
(sorry, couldn't help myself--though "Donder" does mean "Thunder." (Someone's tailfeathers have been parked in that computer chair a lit-tle too long.)

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info

A NEW map of ALL the Greater Tulsa area sightings is now posted on page 1 of this thread. There is also a new, second North Tulsa map here on this page, the Street View. In addition, I will be posting a Central Tulsa map, which will catch the Farigrounds area sighting and others "in between" the coverages of the North and South maps. For now, you can view the general Fairgounds area on the Greater Tulsa map. I will be gathering any other maps from other threads and including them on this Map thread. As usual, please let me know if there are errors, questions, clarifications, etc. Thanks for your interest and assistance.

Oh, and please note that the original map title on this thread, "The Map," has been sent packing on account of imprecision and general cheekiness, with the stern admonition that no map shall be deemed greater than any other maps. Henceforth, that map will be now known as the South Tulsa Map.

However, this mapmaker (for one) reserves the right to deem the Red Hawks (Kay, Jay, and Thunder) as greater than any other hawks.

I think we would ALL agree with  this statement Bville.  Afterall if it weren't for KJRH & Kay, Jay & Thunder we most likely wouldn't have even taken real notice of all the other sitings.

Awesome job on the continuing, ever changing maps..............

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info

Hey, there, Tulsa folks--some map ID questions for you:
Could you please identify the buildings in question on this map, for inclusion in a new, improved map of the Langenheim surrounds? The plan is to display more of the individual sightings within this area. (That map will be larger than the one below.)  I think your personal familiarity with this area (and others) is a more efficient and accurate resource, for me, than Internet research, though that is still part of my map toolkit and helps me to frame my questions, as it did here. So this may not be the last of my questions as we get some better maps out there. This process will be ongoing and evolving. Thanks!

NOTE: This photo has been removed, since the questions it posed have been kindly answered. A similar photo--without the questions--is elsewhere in this thread.

Here's to our Map Maven! Wow! Palemale Irregulars again features Tulsa today, and includes a photo of Pale Male with that "clubbed" foot posture, that had me so worried about one of our Langenheim Twins last week. Always something new (and fascinating) to learn!

Hmm, where to start.  All of it is changing as they tear down things as they get ready to widen I-44.
I believe the tower Inn is the next structre to the left.
Trade Winds - I think just the left structure.  Complex to the right might be apt/condo?
Yellow circle complex - French Villa Apartments
Pink Circle - not sure but was an oriental museum but is closed, surrounded by 8-10 ft. fence.
Aqua circle - Patrick Henry Apartments.  They are being torn down as well as the gas station in front of them along E. Skelly Drive  (they were working on it today.)
So for my sighting today, just off your picture to the left is the Best Western motel, then office building   (3152 E Skelly Dr. I think the address was)  where I spotted twin 2.  Twin 1 was in trees behind the Best Western on 50th (? or 49th? - is street between the aqua and pink circles.
