    Re: Post-fledge observations

4:48 p.m.  Saw her!!!  she's so BEAUTIFUL!!!  And so healthy!!!   What a treat!  I took some screen shots.
    The rest are at:

5:18 p.m. Now the camera is back to S. Peoria, looking north northwest.   Hey gang!  I just now caught my breath and went and read all your posts from this afternoon... I had taken Honey to the vet (she's having a hard day), and when I got back and got her settled, I checked the site and there she was...Thunder!!!... I then busied myself with screen shots,  posting to flickr... and whew!  I am so happy and grateful I was able to see her!  Hi workaholic!  It's been a long time!  Welcome back!  It sounds like either there's another juvenile hawk out there 3 miles (east did you say?) from the station... or maybe you're right and Thunder is expanding to another territory... ??? Who knows.  Anyway, thanks for the on-the-ground observation... Got a camera for next time? : )
Gunit and catgirl:  You go girls!!!  Thanks again!  Great reports!  I'll look for the pics later!  >sigh<   Such fun.  Made up somewhat for the difficult time today with my poor Honey-girl (daughter-dog).

    Workaholic:
And for those that are missing the actual Cam action of young eyas, since Thunder has fledged and the Falcons have fledged, there is a really fun Barn Owl cam on a nest in the UK that is a real Hoot (Pun intended)  There are three owlets, hatched almost two weeks apart, so there is a huge difference in the largest vs the smallest one, however, the smallest one makes up for it's small size by being quite fiesty and holds it's own.  I have seen it upend the oldest and snatch the food right away from it, and gobble it whole, like a toddler snatching somthing away from an older sibling.
    http://www.barnowltrust.org.uk/infopage.html?Id=237

links to the nestcam diary and in the upper right is a link to the two cams for the nest. One is inside the box, one is outside the box in the barn

I just peeked in on that nest.  Only one little white owlette present... sleeping standing up.  I figure it's about 1-ish in the morning there.   Such a cartoon-like little character!  So cute!  Thanks, Workaholic.   You might want to copy your post about this nest on the "Rapter Rap" link, for anybody just landing there looking for Non-Thunder Nest links, discussions, etc.  Anyway, thanks again!

WOW OH WOW! I missed it! Sad

Great gunit and socal we can always depend on you to catch the action. Thunder IS so beautiful. She is starting to look sooooo grown up. But you can still tell it is her!

    Sweet pictures!

I was really getting depressed with hardly anyone posting and no Thunder in the nest. Although gunit and catgirls adventures were the only thing keeping my hopes up!! Then wham! I actually fell back asleep this morning and missed my sunrise post then have been too busy to sneak a peak during the day and see what happens!!!

Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you Thank you

    Re: Post-fledge observations

So great some of you got to see the hawks today.  Thanks workaholic for the tip about the hawk at that park.  I will have to check it out!!  Check for a PM to verify location.
Gunit - I was also at times in the Best parkinglot, also on south side of station, at the times you were there!  We must have passed each other or we were going in circles at same time!!!   I never see Thunder in the neighborhood - only when she visits the tower.

On way home from work, 6:30ish, spotted Jay on one of the antennas.  Then who I am pretty sure is Thunder flew in from the south and perched on antenna one level lower.  Jay took off to the south, Thunder called a few times (I'll post pictures later I promise - I think some good ones - of her calling, of Jay's red tail, etc) and then flew off into the trees to the west.  Could not locate either again.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Wow! Glad you got that pleasure, Socal, in the midst of a trying day. You certainly gave us a vicarious thrill with your recounting--your enthusiasm just reverberates. And your quickness with those captures--hope bobdmac is catching the action. Observer, you described my feelings exactly. Thanks to Gunit and Catgirl, as usual, for the up close and personal reports. And I am enjoying that barn owl site, Workaholic. When I peeked in for the first time a while ago, the three owlets each had a mouse. One swallowed hers whole, another abandoned hers for a foray outside the nest box, and the smallest put hers down and commenced cuddling with the second. They must be very well fed babies. The diary is entertaining, as well. Some compensation for having missed our big event this afternoon. I'm thinking this may call for a vigil!  Smile  Then again, there is that pesky warning about a "watched pot." What to do (sigh). Thanks all.

How beautiful are those shots! Fun, indeed. Love the tail flares that show off the coloring so well. Thank you, catgirl.

Those are wonderful, catgirl! I hope you weren't getting soaked to the bone while capturing all of these so selflessly for us all to enjoy! That poor soaked hawk! ... and he was so close to the perches right under the domed roof of the nest! Wouldn't you think he'd want to be up under there instead?! So funny. Such characters.... Thanks again for those! Priceless.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Aaahhh, thank you.  No, I stayed dried - got to keep the camera dry!!!  So while it was pouring I hurriedly put down my window, covered the area with a towel and snapped a few pictures before quickly putting the window back up!!!

But yes, my thoughts exactly - just a few feet from a dry perch!!!!  I guess he wanted a good showerBig Smile  He had a bit of advance warning with lightning and thunder.  Since they spend like half the day or more preening, guess it gives him a reason to preen!!!!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

When out this morning, spotted hawk on the Mazzio's Tower (after I just said the other day that they never perch there anymore!!) around 9:40 am.  Found a parking spot and walked over to snap a few pictures - had not been there a minute or two when she took off and circled off to the north towards Whole Foods.  Thank you Thunder for giving me a couple of minutes to get situated Big Smile   Hmmm,  wonder if Jay had been at Whole Foods around the same time?  Russell posted some pictures of Jay on the screen captures/photo thread - GREAT JOB Russell!!!!!
    I posted two new pictures
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/cheryls_camera/2658182517/
One of Thunder on the tower - oh so cute and loveable, almost want to hug her!! - and one of her flying  ( I put my new camera on sports photography and just clicked away - close to 100 shots in just a couple of minutes of Thunder flying!!!)

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Also spotted workers on the tower - hunched down on the ring platforms, painting.  I wonder what they would have to say about how well the hawks clean up after themselves after they have used those ring platforms for dining al fresco!!
