tripsqkr, here's another one for your street sign collection. I think I'd just title it "Confusing Street Sign."

Socal, I also like the "crash of rhinoceri." Even though the plural takes a little grammatical license, it just sounds more fun than the standard plural.

bobdmac, my impression that they took grammatical license was the same as yours, but I checked it out and low and behold... per Brittanica.com: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/501391/rhinoceros "rhinoceros mammal plural rhinoceroses , rhinoceros , or rhinoceri" ......(read to the tune of "Funiculì, Funiculà")

I'll be darned! Well, that's to be expected from the hotbed of heresy and revisionism that is Britannica, I guess. In any case, it's another valuable reminder that language actually evolves from the bottom up, rather than from the top down.

You guys are a riot! Literatti amock! Bville: You are amazing, awesome, and barking mad! (grin) Love the Horsehawk, bobdmac. Sent that around to my address book. What is a bunch of people? Is there a particular term? I recall a "clowder" of cats, but "crowd" of humans just has no zing to it! A pod of people? Un oh. Thinking of pod people...not at bedtime. Oh dear. Will Kevin McCarthy save me or Donald Sutherland?

How about a harangue of humans, or a perplexity of people?

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to squawk, talk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects

Here's an interesting video about a raptor observation center just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, in the Marin Headlands––part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area––with spectacular views of the coastline, Bay, and surrounding terrain. There's even a place called "Hawk Hill," with all kinds of raptors flying around. I'm going to have to check it out myself. The first part of the video is about the landscape, and about 4 minutes into it is the Raptor Center.

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to squawk, talk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects

While navigating around and trying to get a fix on that video, bobdmac, I ran across a Golden Gate Raptors Observatory article about a leucistic turkey vulture out your way. The observations & video are from a few years back, but still interesting. And there is an entertaining little Melville-esque monologue there, as well, from a modern-day sailor/Ahab wannabe. (Now who would dare to mess with great American literature?)

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to squawk, talk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects

Sorry, Bville, the video was from March 8-9, 2008. I guess it just went out of date, because the earliest listed date on that page is now March 15-16, a week later. Darn. It was working early this AM. As a consolation, here's a You Tube video taken from Hawk Hill at sunset, with great scenery, but no raptors, unfortunately. It's still a great shot of the fog coming into the Bay, submerging the bottom half of the Golden Gate Bridge. Toward the end, you can see the Berkeley hills in the background.

Thanks for the Leucistic vulture link. It's quite a sight. The mini-soliloquy is pretty good. Funny how these darned birds inspire literary allusions, isn't?

Lovely video. I see the inspiration for the lyrics: "...the morning fog may chill the air...."
