Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to talk, squawk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects
Today around 10:20 am I cut through the neighborhood of the Langenheim redtail hawks. I could see an adult circling off to the east and south of the nest, near 48th and Pittsburg. I parked and tried to get a couple of photos and I could see another hawk off to its north circling some. I thought it was the other adult (but found out differently when zoomed in on the one blurry shot I got of the second hawk!)- so I circled around the block and as I tried to park again a juvenile passed overhead!!!!
adult circles by-

and the juvie!

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to talk, squawk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects
I never saw them catch any prey last year, and have only once this year, but the one I have seen appears healthy and well fed. The Nest Tree has filled in with leaves and can no longer see the nest, but anxiously looking for fledglings to appear soonish.

Keep looking workaholic - they have at least one juvie that is out and about!!!!! So your chances of spotting some of the family is pretty high right now I think.... Keep us posted.

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to talk, squawk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects
Today I could see two hawks on a cell phone tower near the Ranch Acres nest. Curious to see if one was a juvenile, I parked close and looked through my zoom lens to determine it was two adults. One took off, circling over the area of the RanchAcres nest (2 miles east and slightly north of KJRH nest). I drove by the nest and parked, walked to where could get a glimpse..... as I could see something..... From the view I got of the left one's tail feathers, they are not quite ready to fledge yet. It seems like the parents did not start their nest sitting until around a week - 10 days after Kay and Jay. From an occasional spotter in the neighborhood, this pair also had two juveniles last year.

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to talk, squawk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects
I am Debbie. My husband is Richard.
You are more than welcome for the picture. The nest on the back side of the lake is about 300-400 ft. from the road. It is on a corner so can be viewed from two roads. While there that day, a few people came by checking on the nest. Here is an email I got from Sutton about the bird.
Feel free to post the picture with my credit. I imagine those people would love to see it. I have not been able to figure out how to post on that site.
Later,
Debbie
Hi Debbie & Richard,
Ryan Van Zant sent me a copy of the photograph you took of the Bald Eagle on Sooner Lake. Of course without having the band number I can't say anything definitive about it.
We released 90 Bald Eagles in Oklahoma from 1985 through 1990. We banded them with a permanent U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service aluminum band on the left leg. So, that could be one of the eagles we released; and it would be from 19 to 24 years old. Because we (Sutton Avian Research Center) were the only ones banding eagles in OK, it probably is one of ours. However, some of our eagles banded in Oklahoma have been recovered or seen in Kansas and Texas, so this bird could have come from another state.
Last month I was notified of a band return of an eagle we released in Alabama which was found dead near a highway in Georgia, it was 18 years old, so the Sooner Lake eagle, assuming that it's one of ours, is the oldest eagle of ours we have recorded so far.
Good work! Thanks for contacting us with this information.
Regards,
Alan

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to talk, squawk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects
Lots of hawk sightings today. The Ranch Acres pair were playing in some thermals above the cell tower there near the store.
I believe I have spotted two juveniles.s near Langenheim on the Cell tower directly to the west of the old Ramada on 51st just south of I 44.
Way Way north on N 46th and Periora I think it was a Red Shoulder flying about.
And then down on Sheridan at 41st across from the Home Depot, two adult Red Tails were riding the thermals right before the rain started.
That is my report for today.

Thanks for your reports workaholic. I went by the Langenheim area Sunday morning and could see one of the adults sitting on a power pole along Harvard, west of their nest. It took off to the southwest, immediately being chased by the group of birds west of spiritbank.. I never did hear or see the juvies. Today as I drove by I could see what I thought was one of the juvies (by the longer tail) changing trees near the nest. I keep hoping they will start using the area around spiritbank like last year - so so much easier to spot!!! I could see the ranch acres juvies at their nest also on Sunday but did not see the adults. One of the 36th&Lewis RTs has been perching on the cell phone tower alot recently - every day. Occasionally the other adult joins it. When I drove by their nest a few days ago, I could hear a hawk crying out - maybe their juvie? I have not seen the 51st&Peoria RTs since their juvie fledged except for an occasional glimpse off in the distance. I noticed last Friday and since, one of the Billboard RTs is sitting at their billboard constantly and the other adult is often with it. Definite problem with their nest, not sure what happened to the juvie. I will post photos and details when I hear back more. Very sad situation to watch, to listen to them calling and circling the area and sitting, waiting, watching.
