Hmmm, Observer--great find! I'll take a stab at an ID:  Perhaps the elusive male High-winged Orange-banded Indigo Cloudhopper, whose nest I googled for this shot. (You'll note that the female of the species, more drab in coloration, is sitting on the nest):

You guys are cracking me up! Nice to know I'm not the only one walking around with my eyes to the sky!



Last night I think my hubby and I saw one of their babies, Ultralight. He was practicing branching, as he was not very high off the ground. He does have some of his vibrant plumage, but it hasn't filled in yet!

You guys are hysterical!!! I saw a double-winged crimson crop buzzer today myself!! I didn't have my camera, darn!!  ;) Good call on the juvenile plummage camfan!  After a long day this is cool to come home to!

My Indigo Bunting has returned anlong with my hummers and other feeder birds and I am thrilled to be able to watch then all again. I found a tell-tale pile of grey-beige feathers below one of the feeders, though...my Cooper's Hawk must have returned also!

 

 Rubydo:  I have been fascinated to watch the drama in the eagle nest tonight.  The wind came up, parent flew down to the nest.  The center of the nest was hollowed out quickly.  Slowly, slowly, the parent nudged, nudged, nudged JJ over to the prepared place.  Next, she placed herself between JJ and the wind and carefully moved over the top of JJ.  The wind increases in speed now, while she remains, head upright with her wings softly spread over our precious little one.

CT, I wish I could have seen that. I hope someone got some screen captures. It is too bad we can record it like we did with Kay and Jay. I was worried about them. I was watching the weather and it look like it was going to be bad. I hope they are ok today.

Due to heightened awareness, thanks to the Forum that KJRH has provided us, I'm thrilled to report that there are Red Tail Hawks out here in the Suburbs! (No surprise, I'm sure!) For the past 4 days I have heard the distinct cry of a hawk... with binoculars in hand I have tried to definitively identify it as a Red Tail. Sunday 5/17 he finally circled low enough that I saw the red tail. The location is 81st (also called Houston) and 129th (also called Olive St.) in Broken Arrow (they have Tulsa and Broken Arrow names attached to all major roads, confusing...)  Whether or not he is the same Red Tail that sat on my back fence and devoured his prey during January's ice storm on roughly the 28th, I don't know. And was he the same one that circled low on March 17th - and then landed in a tree in an adjacent neighborhood's park? A friend of mine happened to be sitting in the park at that same exact time and saw the hawk with the red tail circling, calling and then land.

Meanwhile today my hubby swung by KJRH on his way back from a meeting, but did not spot Kay or Jay anywhere. But, as he returned to work at 41st & Yale around 1:00, a red tail was flying very low over the parking lot as he walked to the building. In his words, it was 'really neat'.

Thanks, CamFan, and welcome to the ranks of Raptor Reporters! I've put those sightings on the Map. The park you referred to in the March 17 sighting--would that be Country Aire Park? If not, which one? Looking forward to hearing more about those suburban redtails!

Bville, we can't recall the name of the neighborhood, but the park is located at the corner of Dallas and 129th (Olive) on the West side of the street. (It's just North of the 81st & 129th intersection.)

With the weather turning better, the hawk sightings are becoming easier. The last two mornings at 0604 and 0602, an adult Langenheim RT has been sitting on the top of the Spirit Bank. This afternoon coming in from work around 438pm again, sitting on top of the Spirit Bank next to the park. rc

Thanks Workaholic! Have you noticed any changes in the local prey population from last year?  Does it seem about the same? Any word on that nest in a tree-was it you or Catgirl or Gunit that found it?  I wonder if they have babies getting ready to fledge soon!
