We've talked in the past about a more conversationally oriented place to chat, and Bville's recent post has given me the impetus to put this thread up and see how it goes. I don't want to eliminate the chat and conversation that accompanies our observations in the "Post-fledge" thread, but I thought this would be a good place for us to feel free to go as off-topic as we like, and it would keep the observations thread a little cleaner.

What do people think of this idea?

I like the idea.  I think  we've got a method going here that will work.  Thanks.  At times I didn't know where to post, but we're getting organized.  Had to do chores this morning, but now I'm having lunch with Thunder.  I'll check the observation thread to see if she's eaten.

Here is a link to a story of raptor interest: eagles, talons locked together, down in the water, helpless, rescued by fishermen with pliers, then the eagles swam to shore. Swam?

Catbird, that's a fascinating story. I remember seeing a Youtube video of two competing eagles with their talons locked together, spiraling down toward the ground. They separated just before they hit.

It makes sense that eagles would have at least some skills in the water, since they catch fish, but it's such a funny image to think of them swimming.

By the way, I don't know if you saw it, but on the old thread, I posted a link to a fantastic photo diary of an urban hawk family in Southern California. The guy was able to get some great close-ups and has added a funny commentary to a lot of the pictures. It's broken up into chronological chapters and is an absolute must-read, fascinating. Here's the link.

2:11 PM CST: I am so glad that this is Raptor Rap! Go Tulsa! I did see that link and dragged it to my desktop, did a quick peek then sent it right off to Donna for her urban hawk report for her readers who are going to pounce on it like I did. I need to leave for a bit but plan to spend the afternoon in Steve Wolfe's page and (of course) keeping an eye on Thunder. She just grows exponentially every time I see her, not just in skills but confidence in her body, in her movement, even depth of her body. Her feathers and layers of feathers must be growing madly. No wonder the girl has the itchies. :-)

PS: If you can find that YouTube video of the eagles skydancing with locked talons, please post it! I would love to see it! And send it to Donna too! They are, one and all, as addicted as we are to the lives of the fascinating lives of raptors.

2:32. Hubby will be pleased at the squawk, talk, raptor rap, he mentioned about us folks, during supper last night and thought we're a bunch of raptorwrites. I like the idea better, all us raptor's rap'n . Thanks bobdmac for getting us on the right/flight path to rappin' about raptor's, squawkin' with delight :)

Here it is, Catbird. It's a dramatic video, although it would be a little better if the narration weren't trying so hard to hype it up. It's a couple of sea eagles on the coast of Borneo.

I now have the California redtails photo site bookmarked in my birds folder just in case I actually ever find time to look at it.  Suggest that those who have not yet watched the video of the eagles with locked talons do so with their sound turned off.  What dumb narration, indeed!  I've seen similar scenes, probably on nature programs on TV.  Thanks for posting the links, Bob.  Here's one for you since you've said you watch owls:

Thanks for that link, HLC, although I had to copy and paste it, because the hotlink was not valid. Did you notice they said the great horned owl had taken over a RED TAIL HAWK's nest? Grrrrr! The great horned owls are just about the baddest North American raptors, maybe second to the golden eagle, or maybe not. They've been known to drive bald eagles out of their nests.

I happen to enjoy the barn owls more. Their faces really get me--such a striking countenance.
