    Re: Post-fledge observations

Hello everyone.  I have been away for a bit but now back home again and trying to catch up on all the posts.  In the last couple of days when I have been out, I have spotted just a little bit of hawk action.  Friday morning I saw a RT hawk at Riverparks, just south of 41st.  As it was a workday (construction machinery busy) I could not venture across, plus it was rather foggy/hazy.  I posted a couple of pictures - but from the distance - aagh, it was hiding its face behind a cottonwood leaf!!
I went back the next morning and spotted it just north of 41st and Riverside.  I was able to cross over and start to slowly approach the area , but the hawk quickly flew off to the south and I lost it in the trees.

Friday evening I also saw Jay on the KJRH Tower.  When I first saw him, he was on his favorite highest perch.  When I came back by a little bit later (6:40 pm) he had moved to one of the lower antennas.  It was good to see him visiting the nesting tower - it had been awhile.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Bless your heart, catgirl! It's always so fun to be able to see Jay again! He looks good... healthy. I hope that Kay is too... and that they both have the same idea toward the KJRH nest, come December-ish... I also so hope our dear Thunder is faring well. Oh, per your other post: This is great news about your siting of the Riverside and 41st hawk!... Fantastic!... You go, catgirl! Thanks, again!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Way to go, catgirl! I've mapped your sightings. So, then, were these last two sightings of the same bird, and can you or anyone confirm from the photos that it was one of the KJRH Hawks? (I've put that tag on it for the map for the time being, as it was right there in KJRH territory.)  Thanks!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

yea catgirl!!!  More hawk sightings! I hope it was Kay also. Perhaps in a month or two you all will begin to see some more activity.  I don't know when the coupe starts their seasonal mating routine but maybe you will be able to watch them sky dancing around gthe KJRH tower!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Is that Kay? Seems more like Kay than Jay, but lighting can play tricks. I think Jay's brea$t is lighter and I don't see his distinctive eyebrows.  Either way, I am so very glad to see our intrepid catgirl back and sneaking up on the redtails again!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Houston update: Family is safe but homeless. Living temporarily with others in makeshift shelter in the clubroom at the apartment complex. Power back on in their area late Sunday -- 16 days after Ike roared through. Cousin K's husband released from the hospital today. Thank you for your prayers.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Catbird-thank God they are safe. Having just been without power, but having all the other things in my life, I can't imagine what they must be going through. I hope they can begin to rebuild their lives very soon.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Sunbyter: I am glad you caught this. I am so thankful to you. You were my eyes and helped me to wait it out. I misunderstood. They are not homeless. They sheltered in place in their "fort" made of sofa cushions and mattresses when Ike was tearing out 100 year old trees by the roots and flinging them hither and yon. They say they will never ever eat out of a can again. Their two dogs and one cat are fine too. They got used to no power. Walked to the YMCA daily and took showers there (YMCA had a generator), pooled resources with others in their complex. Local stores let them wash up with warm water too. Another cousin is still without power, but they are in touch with her and all is well. Many blessings to count.

    Thanks again all!!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

    sunbyter,

how are you?  in all of this and you offering to help catbird, how are you and yours?  I hope you have escaped major damages yourself. You have been a lifeline for sure.  This list is amazing.

I was so glad here to have my AT&T old-style landline when my cell and the cable service were both out with the power down!  So many were totally out of touch for so long. And we did not get anything like you did there, I cannot even imagine the destruction and the cleanup needed. Businesses here shipped in generators from Chicago when the power wasn't restored, grocery stores lost massive amounts of food that they could not keep frozen even with generators and refer trucks standing by.  And this was KENTUCKY, not Texas!

Speaking of which, anyone heard from bobdmac lately?  I know this is the time of not much happening but we haven't seen him for some time...

We are getting some very weak and starving birds now in rehab.  I haven't had time to talk to my director much, but my poorly educated guess is that the long drought we have had is taking its toll on the prey base and the young birds are having trouble making it on their own now that parents aren't feeding them.  I hope our dear Thunder is doing well.  The Tulsa habitat seems exceptionally rich and I hope she will find food a plenty there!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

hi, me and mine are safe here in our little city!  We got no damage to our home, but many others are not as fortunate.  Trees lost lots of leaves and branches, but the stray cat and her kitten under my deck made it fine, lol. It is hard to see Galveston all torn up. But, they will rebuild.  We have many still missing from Ike. The storm surge was very strong in the bay.  Catbird, your family is so lucky to have a Y nearby.  They have been opening all their services for anyone needing it. The mosquitos here are as large as hummingbirds, lol. Also, they are everywhere, you dare not go out without deet on.  Thank all of you for your good thoughts and prayer.  Please keep it up as many, many are still suffering here.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Catbird, sunbyter, and sallyls:  I've been sporadically tuning in to see how all of you and yours are faring.  It's wonderful that everybody seems to have been spared life and limb, at least.  That's always the best news!  And for those still struggling with living conditions, my heart goes out to them...  I hope and pray it's not much longer before their lives can get back in order...  Thanks for keeping us all informed so we can pray for and wish them our best!

Any more sightings of the local hawks, lately?    catgirl, Workaholic, tripsqkr, or kactionphoto?...

    Re: Post-fledge observations

As soon as the leaves come off the trees you local folks should have an easier time trying to see which hawks are hanging out for the winter.  I am looking forward to reading about your sightings! Maybe there should be a contest for the first sighting of Kay and Jay sky dancing this winter?
