A favor? Donegal at the Palemale Irregulars blog is collecting reports on bird sightings in the areas of the country where her readers reside. This would make a perfect addition to her blog. Please think about doing a cut/paste and sending it to Donegal?

Re: Post-fledge observations
Socal, the calling all folks idea of yours did go through my head yesterday. All I could think of was, someone KC, Catgril, etc. could get some really good pics of Gwen here, if I could just get them down here. I also thought that if I had even had my little camera with me, I could have gotten at least a decent pic. However, everyone here has a great imagination, so I am sure that all can just "picture it" as my fav golden girl Sophia used to say.

Re: Post-fledge observations
Workaholic, what magnificant sightings for you. I am so glad you got to spend that time with Gwen - such a special magical time - and few and far between!!
I am always out looking, but no news for this past week. I have spent hours and hours checking out previous sighting areas for both the KJRH hawks and the Langenheim ones - but have been coming up with nothing. So I am always so thrilled when someone else has a spotting. A neighbor friend was out walking in our neighborhood a few evenings ago and she called me when she was about 1/2 mile north of our homes - she had just seen a bald eagle - the first time she had ever seen them anywhere but up by Keystone Dam (that KC told us about, the winter viewing of them hunting below the dam). She was so excited (bville - 43rd and S. Victor) to see it perched on a light pole then fly off, but too rattled to think to try to get picture with her cell phone camera!! So my guess is that it is one of the adults that I have seen down by the river - since one I recently photographed was at 43rd and Riverside.
I did see the eagles out flying around their river perch area yesterday but they disappeared before I could get a picture - a bush was in the way and then when I repositioned, they had disappeared.
So off to hunt more sightings today. How I would love to catch a glimpse of one of the KJRH family again - well, actually I would love more than a glimpse - I want a full out photo session!!!!!!
The coopers hawks (or the smaller similar ones) were very active in our area yesterday but never perching long enough to even spot in the binoculars. But now I can hear the bluejays and mockingbirds complaining loudly - so maybe time to checkout what is going on in my own neck of the woods!!

Thanks for that report, catgirl. I put the sightings on the map.
Just one question: this past 43rd & Riverside sighting--I assume that is
the one for which you had those photos on 8-16? I don't think there was an address listed in that post. Just wanted to make sure that this was one sighting, not two.

So sorry for the delay in replying to this, Catbird... Ya know, I see so many of them of late, in my comings and goings,... on bicycle, on foot, and by car...all around my city, and the few neighboring cities I travel through... (and I HEARD an owl outside our bedroom last night at about 2:30 a.m. So. Cal. time...
it went like: "hoo - hoohoo - HOO HOO" !!! ) .... anyway, I just don't think I want to take that on right now... maybe later... . I'll try to capture what I can with my camera (if with me), and make note of what road, what block address, etc... and if possible try to i.d. which type of hawk (sometimes it's hard to discern)...if time permits...but usually I'm on a mission with a time frame (my exercise, honey's little exercise, errands for us, for mom, or going to take mom here and there, etc.), and then I need to get onto other "missions" after that one before the day runs out of hours! ... you get my drift. So I think this one forum, in short, is plenty for me for now. But thanks for the idea! ... Anyway, to make a long story longer (sorry... as usual).... I will TRY, but may not make the goal completely...

socal: Are we a social, verbose bunch or WHAT?!?!
Hi, Observer, jump on into the festivities! (We might as well rock on well past this page.) We look forward to the days when there will once again be regular doin's for you to train your observant eyes on in Red Hawk Land--that is, the KJRH tower and surrounds. (Maybe even another night flight?!) Socal, it strikes me that one of the charms of our Forum is that each of us has come to this venue as social, verbose, and/or WHAT! (gotta love us WHATfolk). Plus, we may wander about amongst those three characterizations at our leisure, claiming one or the other whenever and whyever, or taking on all three hats simultaneously. So pick a hat, any hat....and blessings on us all--and on our Red Hawks! Socal--I just noticed that you are only one vowel away from Social. How fitting and how true for Madame Congeniality!

Socal! Owl hooting, how cool! Try this when you are bored-they have calls of more owls than I knew existed on this site. Maybe you can identify yours. http://www.owlpages.com/sounds.php

Re: Post-fledge observations
Thanks so much for the owl sounds link. I had been hearing one for the past month or two in the middle of the night and wondered what kind it was. And just a few days ago a neighbor friend was telling me about hearing one outside her bedroom window the previous night. So thanks to your link, sallyls, I think it is a spotted owl or one of the hybrids!!!

Re: Post-fledge observations
On one of my many hawk hunting outings, I came across this beauty, enjoying the last moments before the rains started, along Riverside Drive (42nd Place) - near where I have been seeing Jay. She is also perched in the same dead tree that I took the photos of the bald eagle in August. The construction on the running/biking paths is heading that way, with lots of work between 41st north to 31st, and quite a bit at 41st and Riverside as they construct a new park plaza and parking, etc. On the weekends, there is less traffic along Riverside so it is possible to walk across to the park and find an opening in the construction fencing, and no construction to deal with. During the week - I have to be content with the long range shots!! A few more of these long distance shots (hmm, who is it?) as well as a few others of birds in the river area and several of the 36th and Lewis RT are up on my flickr site (www.flickr.com/photos/cheryls_camera)

Re: Post-fledge observations
Catgirl... That looks like Sebastian! Darkish solid head, speckeldy vest. Is it possible yall that the adults have pushed the youth out and we are seeing them take up residence, not terribly far away, but not in their birth neighborhood? It would be too cool if we could manage to keep track of them.
