Catgirl, I think you've acquired an eagle eye and hawk-like vigilance.

Re: Post-fledge observations
I'm starting to think that Jay knows who you are, catgirl. Seeing that he landed closer to you, maybe he's just saying, "Hello, I know who you are! The lady with the camera that stalks me all over Brookside." I do believe that seeing you for quite some time now, that he knows who you are. Afterall, you can recognize him so why not vice versa.

Re: Post-fledge observations
I completely agree with redfinch. He knows you and knows you mean no harm, knows you as a friend. This is so very lovely. Closest you have EVER been to him too!

Re: Post-fledge observations
catgirl-thanks for the updates! I am so glad you are out and about and reporting!
bobdmac, wow, wild turkeys in Berkely, just ambling down the road. What do you know!
kc-your phtography, your ability to capture the "moment" and with such crisp clarity is amazing. Do you adjust your photos before posting or are these raw? either way, gorgeous!

Re: Post-fledge observations
Awesome picture catgirl. I bet Jay does recognize you since he sees you at his home territory at the station. He was probably thinking "Oh cool it's catgirl, my personal photographer, think I'll give her a good closeup shot of me"

Re: Post-fledge observations
catgirl: I think those gorgeous pictures of Jay just let us into another "room" of his existence... the same way your photos of Kay and Thunder did for us, down by the river.... a thousand thank-you's!!!! My personal favorite out of the new Jay pics is the one with him on the ground, his back to you, wings up but bent (rather than straight out), and that fabulous red tail fanned out. Exquisite. Thank you again. I know you are busy.... But any time you manage to post your photos of "our" KJRH hawk family, it's like somebody just opened the blinds on a window we've been missing the view out of for some time. Bliss. Thank you again, catgirl, for those!!!

Re: Post-fledge observations
I really take my hat off to you catgirl on the pictures you are able to capture. On Friday I get off early from work & was home about 1pm. I went outside for a cigarette & could hear blue jays squawking iin a tree in the backyard across the street. I was trying to see what they were yelling about & heard a high pitched sound of a hawk. This noise went back & forth for about 10 minutes. All of a sudden the hawk flew into the tree next door to me on the corner of Troost & 50th. I ran into the house to get the camera but of course by the time I found batteries, etc & came back outside it flew off to the north on Troost. The blue jays kept following & harrassing the poor thing so it stayed hidden in amongst the leaves. I watched it fly from tree to tree for about 2 hours & could never get where I could get a clear shot. It even ended up way up in the tree in my own backyard, then flew off again. I came back out front & was just about to the curb & the hawk flew towards the tree across the street, was just about to land, spotted me & took off in the other direction. Not sure, but figured it was probably one of the Perryman Ditch hawks. I guess with the weather finally cooling off they might begin to get more active. I didn't notice any activity within my area the rest of the weekend.

Re: Post-fledge observations
Sallyls, since I shooting with a 300mm f4 lens, most of my wildlife images are cropped to increase the size of the animal. Most all of my hawk images are shot with this lens alone. For my eagle shots I add on a 2x teleconverter that doubles the lens to 600mm. Only draw back is that it requires the use of a tripod and the trade off with the teleconverter is that you get less than half the light and you must manually focus.
I use Photoshop 7.0 and just about every image gets cropped, resized, a mild curved adjustment (unless I totally blew the exposure) and about 50% Unsharp Mask to improve sharpness. I just purchased a Nikon D300 this week and am eager to see how well it performs for wildlife versus my workhorse Nikon D200. So far the image quality at high ISO has been fantastic in the youth football scrimmages I have shot.
I'd love to find a decent used 400mm to 500mm prime lens to add to my kit.

Re: Post-fledge observations
Catgirl, I finally went back and looked at all your photos of Jay and the eagles. Outstanding job. What a privilege to be able to get so close to Jay! And I'd love to see a bald eagle. For the moment, I'll have to settle for turkeys, I guess.

Re: Post-fledge observations
Trips: Thank you thank you thank you. I have been wondering about the Perryman Ditch hawks...and worrying too. Was it an adult redtail, could you see? Juveniles do eat a lot of baby birds, as they are an easy catch, of course for a not yet practiced and skilled hunter, and prey birds know this. I think the mobbing of redtails may be as hard-wired into their brains (especially mocking birds and jays), as with young redtails' begging behavior, when they see their parents, they start begging madly, even if they just ate. What a treat for you to see the redtail for so long! even if it was being harrassed. Even if you didn't get a photo, you gave us a wonderful picture of your sighting!

Catgirl: Wonderful photos of Jay, in the sunlight, so close! I second Socal. Once again, you have opened that magic window into their lives for us.

KC, I sense an imminent case of LBA (lens buying addiction) coming on. And man, those long lenses cost $$$$$, especially if you get the image stabilization version. The high ISO quality of the D300 is a blessing, at least, in that it gives you more alternatives.

Re: Post-fledge observations
KC, Bob-you guys are beyond me talking about such high-caliber equipment. My son would be able to fully appreciate the technical data you have given, though! I am sure those lenses cost BIG bucks. Sure take great photos, but someone still has to frame it and shoot it!
