    Post-fledge observations

Let's keep up with Thunder as she continues to develop. Since she's returned to the nest, our online community can continue to monitor her activities -- at least to some degree -- and we'll hopefully learn more about this amazing species...

Hahaa, Russell, I see you've beaten me to it!

    10:01

Thunder remains on her perch above the nest, facing the camera and occcasionally preening. She's looking around, probably for Mom or Dad.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

10:10 Still perched on bar over nest facing camera, looking straight at camera, then to the right of camera, then back and to left of camera. Calm fledgling, no preening now. Now tucks left foot up. Looking cold.. maybe still trying to get completly dry?. fluffing out....

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Wonderful!!  Thanks Russell.  I posted somthing over the weekend, I think, that might have gotten lost in the shuffle, I will ask now.  Russell, do you think you could capture all of the KJRH videos from egg to whenever we stop on DVD and offer it for sale to any of us who would like to keep a permanent record of this adventure?  I know I would love to have it and I am sure others would also.  Thanks.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

bobdmac: On the old observation thread, Russell suggested, "...I'll start the [new] observation thread, if one of you wants to start the other [new conversation] thread that'd be great."  Since you are a senior member of this forum, would you like to go ahead and start the new, post-fledge Conversation thread? How about something like "Flock Talk"?

    Re: Post-fledge observations

10:38 Thunder still on same bar over nest, looking calm, toward camera. No grooming. Just looking around.
    Weather (per NOAA):
    Light Rain

69°F (with expected high of 84 degrees F)
    (21°C)
    Humidity: 87 %
    Wind Speed: N 7 MPH becoming S 10-13
    Barometer: 29.97" (1014.2 mb)
    Dewpoint: 65°F (18°C)
Showers and Thunderstorms likely with 1/4 to 1/2 inch possible

10:41, Thunder just stretched wings, and is calling out a bit, and beginning some preening and scratching. Then tucking her left foot back up. More preening.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Bville, are you suggesting parallel threads, one for post-fledge observation and one for post-fledge conversatiions? If so, I'm torn about this. On the face of it, it makes sense to separate them. On the other hand, I think it can take some of the life and enthusiasm out of the observaton thread if we limit strictly to observations such as "Thunder preens, facing 6...," etc. So if we want to have a thread center around, but not strictly limited to, observations, and a "Hawk talk" thread, we could try that and see how people like it. Just sto set the record straight, there are a lot of folks who've been on the forum longer than I have. I came along about the 20th. Since I notice I'm up to more than 400 posts already, I may be the most manic poster, but not the senior one.

Anyway, I like your suggestion of "Hawk Talk," and I'll be honored to start that thread, with the idea that it's for general conversation about hawk and related raptor conversation that is more off-topic from the observations, but I think people should feel free to converse about their observation-related thoughts and speculation in the "Post-fledge observation" thread.

Edit: I just noticed you suggested "Flock talk," which I like better.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

10:45 thunder just jumped down to bar in front of and closer to camera, at 7 of nest. Looking off to our left.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

1045 T hops from rail at 12 to rail at 6, calling for parents? Definitely vocalizing. Camera tilts down to get a good closeup of her.

As for where to post what, there are no hard and fast rules, this forum is organic -- people will tend to use it in whatever manner best suits their purposes, and we're fine with that.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

10:34. Thunder on same perch, looking down & upwards mostly.

Calling out again/where's that food drop. None so far, can't be much longer! Same position as above, eyes peering/head flit's/eyes upwards, leg stretching. Slight preening again, face itch, preens under wing feathers. Beautiful left wing stretch.

10:42 Thunder calmly doing her usual morning's routine. Just hopped onto front rail, facing camera/calling out/where's my meal Mammeeeeeeee!!

Well folks I'm needing a wee break now. So I'll leave everyone in Thunder's capable talons :) Catch you all later.

10:47 Thank you bobdmac... I totally agree with everything you just said.... And you may be manic about this, but please don't ever change. We need you!

10:49 Thunder preens and gets fluff caught on her beak. Looking around with a beard now.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

10:50 Scratches beak and gets that pesky fluff off. More preening. SOOO gorgeous. Thank you KJRH and Russell once again...

    Re: Post-fledge observations

bobdmac: To clarify, the new, separate conversation thread was suggested by Russell (not me) on the old observation thread. I tend to agree with you. I thought that since Russell was in a meeting and if he wanted a new conversation thread soon, that you would be the logical one to start it (we like "manic"). But I'm quite happy to wait for more discussion on the subject. Just following through with Russell's commentary.

Thanks Russell... I like the organic description. So true.
