    Re: Observation Thread

I'm not sure if Thunder will return, unlike eagles do after fledging, parents make food drop offs in the nest site, so maybe hawks being of the raptor family, have this same behaviour? Thunder has been facing the sattelite dish for awhile and I've notice he's moving further around the nest site, it's like he checking his best advantage points for flight.

    Re: Observation Thread

09:59 Jumps into nest facing camera. Adult arrives from 9:00 (F?) I believe. And, jumps to rail in front of camera. Begins preening. Hawklet standing in nest.

10:02 Adult flies out at 5:00. New route?

10:04 Hawklet jumps to rail at 9:00 and back to nest at 3:00.Turns facing camera. Back to rail at 11:00. Looking out toward dish.

10:08 Standing a edge. Positions feet edging closer to the edge directly behind dish. Sitting low.

    10:10 Looking down over edge.

10:20 same position. Head pulled down and looking directly up.

10:30 Adult arrive with prey at 9:00 (M?). Hawlet takes prey and pulls wings over it as adult arrives at 3:00 (F?) Turns with prey and female feeds hawklet.

10:40 Adult jumps to back edge of platform. Hawklet in nest with prey. Turns and moves sticks. Jumps onto rail and over to 3:00....leaves.

10:43 Hawklet jumps onto rail at 10:00 and looks all around. Jumps onto platform and back to rail.

10:45 Onto platform. picks something small up (stick/bone?) and eats it. Picking with beak in sticks.

10:49 On platform facing out at 9:00 preening

    Re: Observation Thread

11:26 a.m.,  Thunder stands at 6 on railing, and I believe he attempted to fly.  He spread his wings and lifted himself to what seemed to be 6" or so off the "ground".  He did this once, and then after he came back down stretched as tall as he could from the nest and flapped wings repeatedly.  He never actually left nest area, but was in air for a few seconds.

    Re: Observation Thread

11:11 standing still on platform close to edge at 9:00. Stretches and adjust footing.

11:14  Backs up a bit and defacates off platform. Hope no one was standing below. Turns toward back of platform.

11:19 Jumps to platform then across nest to 3:00. Jumping and flaggin inside of nest. Jumps onto rail infront of camera....with some flight involved. Picking at bold/screw again.

11:21 Wings extended, holds flight for a couple of seconds over nest. Really appeared to want to fly at this point.

11:22 to platform, standing with feathers fluffed out. walks across nest with wings extended. Back to nest picks on prey

11:23 turns to face 3:00 jumps to rail at 9:00...then to rail in front of camera...extends wings abit. Picks at talons.

11:27 Looking up into the tower

Thunder is gaining more height with every flapping of wings and confidence in branching out to and from railing and keeps eyes focus upwards, could be parents calling to him, assurance for his first flight, wont be long now! Btw anyone a lunchtime food drop?

    Re: Observation Thread

12:20 - After much preening for the last hour Thunder is lying in the bowl of the nest.  There was a large feather (don't know if it is hers or an adult feather) in the bowl of the nest.  Thunder was picking at it and then laid down on it.  Still picking at the end of it.  Has anyone seen Thunder eat anything today?

13:07 Standing looking out at 3:00. Stretches and scratches. Standing on left foot only. Turns and stretches. Defacates out of nest at 3:00. Jumps to rail at 9:00

13:10 Flapping and jumping. Jumps to platform, near edge, at 9:00. Back to rail at 9:00. Back and forth now.

13:12 Standing on very edge of platform facing out at 9:00. Jumps back onto rail. Closest I have seen the H, I do believe.

13:13 On back of platform behind dish.

    Re: Observation Thread

13:16 Back in nest...stomps on large feather several times. All over the place. Wings extended. Stops facing out at 3:00

13:18 Jumping onto rail in front of camera. Looking up into tower and all around. Following adult, perhaps? Resting left leg on rail, not using talons to grip, then pulls it up.

Thunder up on front railing practising his balance with one  foot stance and, eyes focused upwards as if parent/s calling to him or close by. Parent came in with prey and gives Thunder a feeding, at last!!

    Re: Observation Thread

13:41  This reminds me of jump rope as a kid.  Rocking back and forth, looking for just the right moment to hop in.  Thunder so wants to go, he's just rocking back and forth, watching for his moment.  This is amazing to watch!

    He had a good meal.
