    Re: Naming Contest

I discussed this topic with our GM and we should have a decision by tomorrow. We will discuss it in the station Special Projects Meeting and reach a consensus. Thanks to all for your comments...

Thank YOU for taking the time to ask and taking it to the table for us. It is appreciated.

Yes, I support that.  Thank you very much.

    Re: Naming Contest

To disagree somewhat with Hawktalk, I would use the name Spirit for the one who is now here only in spirit, rather than for the surviving hawklet.  Beloved is rather nice for the remaining hawklet.

I agree with Spirit for the little one.

I also agree with Spirit for the little one.  It seems appropriate.

    Re: Naming Contest

I am a third grade teacher and my students submitted the names "Sunny and Stormy".  I'm glad that you like them.  We have been watching the hawks every morning during our opening time and the students are REALLY excited that their suggestion is number one right now.  We have a SMART BOARD in our classroom and we do the weather with KJRH Channel 2 everymorning.  We thought the names were appropriate since one of them was having a hard time "Stormy" and one was doing great "Sunny".  I think these third graders did a great job coming up with these.  Thanks for having this wonderful experience on your web site so that everyone gets a chance to see this miracle of nature.

    Re: Naming Contest

Okay here's the deal. This has proved to be a somewhat touchy issue because we have a few core people who care deeply about these animals and then we have a LOT of people who are only casually aware of what's going on but constitute a large majority of our viewers/web visitors.

I wrestled with this for a couple days and this morning proposed a compromise solution during the station's Special Projects meeting.

So here is my solution. We will split this process in two, ask our forum habitués to name the hawklet which died and allowing the other naming poll to continue, albeit somewhat modified, through May 5 as originally scheduled.

Now as with most compromises, I suspect this will satisfy no one completely, but hope it will satisfy everyone to at least some degree.

As to the original names chosen for the poll: Those choices were made based largely on popularity and appropriateness. Had we gone with the recommendations alone, Sunny and Stormy would have won handily, they were by far the most suggested names (followed by Sunny and Windy).

I will create a new post for the naming of the hawklet which died... and invite everyone to participate if you wish.

LOL don't worry Rhonda I was kinda picking on you but I knew it was just a typo.

Can't tell you though how many times I've answered the phone here and spoken with people who really can't tell the stations apart...

I spent several years on the assignment desk and have been ROUNDLY cussed out for programs that aired on another station... LOL

    Wink

    Re: Naming Contest

I totally understand the circumstances and had thought them through myself.  This morning in the shower I thought of a similar compromise allowing the surviving hawklet to be named and giving the deceased hawlet a name from the forum.  I so appreciate the thought and consideration that KJRH has given this.  It is a touchy issue.  But your intervention is appreciated.  THANK YOU AND KJRH.

    Re: Naming Contest

Good idea.  Fair enough.  Also wouldn't want to disappoint an entire class of third graders.  Kudos to the teacher for getting them involved.  My sister in law is a fifth grade teacher in Vista, CA and they have been watching also.  What a great teaching tool.

    Re: Naming Contest

Thank you so much for your consideration of EVERYONE.  It seems those little hawklets were/are quite popular, not only with the viewing public, but also on this forum.  Appreciate your efforts at being fair, and not disappointing anyone.  You're right, you can't please everyone, but you can say you tried.  :0)  I am just happy to have had the opportunity for the viewing of a lifetime.  Thank you and thank you to your station, KJRH.  (I got it right this time, haha)
