    Naming Contest

Has anyone else checked out the naming contest?  None of the name choices seem appropriate.  Escpecially since the Little One passed.  They are all two names paired together like Scripps and Howard.  Which one will be which?  Just seems like something else should be more appropriate.

    Re: Naming Contest

I absolutely agree.   I don't like any of the names for such regal birds and especially after the brave struggles of the little one.

    Re: Naming Contest

The contest must be thing for people who don't watch this cam much.  We have come up with some pretty good names here for the two.  Big hoss and little hoss, Lazarus, Older and Younger , Little Wing - all names that come from the heart, that's for sure.  Oh, yes and then there was Braveheart.

    Re: Naming Contest

I assume it is closed for suggestions, since they already have the nominees posted to vote on. I agree the names are not suitable for these hawks and those that sumitted them are not aware of the history of this family. I am not that creative, but was thinking more along the lines of Braveheart, as we have previously mentioned. Or something similar like:

    Scout and Spirit

Red Wing and Little Hawk (Indian Chiefs)

Yazhi (Navaho for Little one) and Sani (Navajo for older one)

There are so many more meaningful names for the two. I wonder if we write the station they will add them for us.

    Re: Naming Contest

It would be worth a try.  I wonder if e-mailing the moderator of this site could shed some light on it.  He is an employee of the station.  Russell Mills /Hawks Nest thread is the moderator , I think.

Your names were excellent by the way.  I like the Native American names, but they all are good.

    Re: Naming Contest

I'm really liking the suggestions for names for these little souls which are so much more meaningful than Okie and Dokie or Howard and Scripps!  I understand that the names available for voting were cute before, but things have changed and these hawklets deserve something with strength and meaning.

Native American names would be very special and something from one of Oklahoma's tribes could be something to consider.  Does anyone know of a site to research this?

    Re: Naming Contest

Here is the site of the Cherokee Nation, one of the nation's largest tribes with many members living in Tulsa.  Plus I have a friend that speaks Cherokee.  If you had a name in mind, I could get her to translate it into Cherokee.  The Creek or Muskogee Nation is also a  tribe with many members in this area. Chicksaw or Seminole are also tribes that came here on the Trail of Tears.

    Re: Naming Contest

I agree that the finalists are pretty inferior.  I like Wings2c's suggestions of 'Little One' and 'Older One,' but not in Navaho--though those names are really nice.  The Navaho are not native to Oklahoma as far as I'm aware.  Hawkeye, can your friend translate those suggestions into Cherokee?  I see that you have a newspaper in Tulsa, the Native American Times.  Perhaps someone there would be willing to translate into another appropriate Native American language.  You undoubtedly have other Native American resources in Tulsa too.

    Re: Naming Contest

I will look into it.  I am going to work now.  But will later today and get back.  I will check into other native speakers as well.  Back later.

    Re: Naming Contest

That would be great to get a translator, but we need to address the suggestions with the station. Has anyone emailed them? If not, I will do it today. I will do it anyway. I searched and searched "name meaning" sites, as well as "Native American" sites. I even searched Oklahoma history. I would like to see them named something specific and special to the state of Oklahoma. Some of the Native American languages are so long and difficult for us to pronounce, I was just looking for something simple from one of the tribes. It doesn't matter to me. My suggestions were just ideas.

See what you guys can come up with, as I agree the suggestions are rather silly and childish. Things have been so dramatic with this pair, I hope we can get them to change the suggestions, or add to them.

    Re: Naming Contest

No, I haven't sent an e-mail to the station.

Some Native American ties for the Surviving Chick.

One idea would be Sequoyah, which is a big name here in Oklahoma.  It is the name of the Cherokee man that first created the Cherokee Alphabet and made it possible for the Cherokee to have a written language, history and communication.  Sequoyah is pretty regal around here.

I am not sure how this might work, but another is Beloved.  The Cherokee are a matriarical society and there is one woman in the tribe that can rise above the chief in reverence and power. She would sit at the center of the council and give advice and wisdom to all at council meetings. That is the Beloved Woman.  So that might be an idea.

Another might be Phoenix, it was the name of the original Cherokee Newspaper printed in Georgia long before the Trail of Tears.  It communicated news to the tribe members enlightening them.  It is also the bird that rises from the ashes in other folklore - so that might have a dual meaning.

How about Council? The Creek/Muskogee tribe picked this spot for the city of Tulsa when they met under a tree called the Council Oak soon after they arrived in Oklahoma in the 1830s.  The Council Oak is a historical and protected tree right in the center of Tulsa.  It is huge and ancient.  It is the site of the original meetings of the tribe and is near the Arkansas River. There is a city park built around the tree.

Lastly,  I like Spirit.  Spirit soars and lifts us.

I still like the name Little Wing for the smaller chick.

I have an e-mail in to my friend about translating.  She may not be available until later today.

That's my two cents for now.

    Re: Naming Contest

I really like some of the names you've suggested, and of course Braveheart is still a favorite of mine also for the little one.  However, KOTV has the final say in this since it is their contest and their tower.  They need to be contacted regarding naming of the hawklet.  Has anyone done this yet?

    Re: Naming Contest

"However, KOTV has the final say in this since it is their contest and their tower"

OUCH! Actually this is KJRH not KOTV.

Just so everyone knows I'm taking your comments/questions about naming the hawket(s) to our station management.

FYI the current leading names are "Sunny and Stormy," which were my personal favorites. The poll closes today.

As for naming both hawklets, I'm in favor of giving the little one a name even though he didn't make it. Seems almost disrespectful to me not to...

BTW it's IMPORTANT to note that these are my personal opinions, not those of the station.

    Re: Naming Contest

I agree with your comments and do hope the station will consider the feedback of the folks who have been watching the posting comments daily and not go forward with the list currently being voted upon. Many of the names that I've seen suggested through this forum would be so appropriate - I especially like Spirit for the surviving hawklet as well as Beloved. For the one that didn't make it, your recommendation of Braveheart is a very nice tribute. I hope Mr. Mills will be able to take the forum's ideas forward with KJRH execs. Fingers crossed!

    Re: Naming Contest

I also like Spirit and either Little Wing or Braveheart.  I hope they get a meaningful name and not a cutesy name.  There wasn't anthing cute about losing that baby.
