The hawklets are alone in the nest resting.  There appears to be more green material on the floor of the nest.

12:07pm -

Chicks still alone in nest.  Largest chick is active, smallest seems to be sleeping.  The largest chick moved around the nest and backed up to the ledge of the nest at 7 and deficated.  That is the second time I have seen that.  That must be an instinct for her to do that outside the nesting area.  She then went back and layed down by the smaller chick.

F in from 9, has a branch with lots of green leaves. Puts it down outside nest at 9.

12:20pm - F out towards 3

12:55pm - F in from 9, chicks are resting. F walks across nest to railing at 3.

13:04pm - Largest chick backs up to the edge of the nest at 10 and deficates, goes back and lays next to smaller chick. Both chicks are awake, not very active. F is staring off towards 3.

14:02pm - One hour later and the are all still doing the same thing.  F is still perched at 3.

3:33pm F on nest facing 5 with hawklets underneath her.

15:50  It appears to me the F has injured her left eye. There are missing feathers above the eye and it is almost completely closed. F is brooding facing 6.

I will continue to watch this development. It is likely from an impact with a solid object. This need not be life threatening for her but puts the hawklets at risk from her talons and weight. (F likely weighs about 2.5 lbs.) It may only be temporary but bears regular observation. You will notice an imbalance is white streaks above and behind the eye as well as in front of the left eye. The expose white areas are the result of removed dark brown outer feathering. (the white are under feathering).

Maybe the cam operator can zoom in on that eye if an opportunity presents itself. Thanks

19:01  M arrives from 9 to 9 ledge then jumps to cam ledge

19:06  F arrives from 9, picks up prey (bird carcass) and jumps to 3 area of nest, jumps to 6 rail

19:09  F leaves via 3

19:33  F arrives from 9 jumps to prey at nest 3, consumes some of prey

19:36  F leaves via 3

I am happy to report her left eye now looks fine. Often with impact injuries it is temporary with time allowing for relaxation, swelling to subside in the area and the eye re-opens.

Today: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. Northwest wind between 11 and 15 mph.

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 42. West wind between 5 and 9 mph.

April 18th

7:10am F still brooding facing 12, still very windy.

7:27am F feeding hawklets from 3, prey appears to be a small bird.  F feeding both chicks.

7:35am F jumps to 9 and flies away leaving bird carcus at 3. 

7:46am F facing between 5-6, very windy

7:47 F sitting on hawklets with leftover carcus at 3:00.

8:46am still very windy

F facing 3 is feeding hawklets.  Baby hawklet was first, then big hawklet now. 

Baby hawklet looks a little stronger, but still having a time standing on it's own. Maybe feet are not to growth yet.  Still very small to big hawlklet.  I wonder if it will be more than 45 days before it can leave its nest learning to fly? 

45 degrees F Winds WNW @ 7 MPH cloudy skies

0845: F feeding large hawklet, she's perched at 3, prey is a bird. Her left eye is fully open and I don't see any inflammation or swelling  Smaller hawklet still remains pretty unsteady on its feet but it looks active, though it's not overly interested in the food. From a purely amateur point of view, I'd like to point out that it's only about 1/2 the size of its sibling, so undoubtedly needs less food at their current level of development.

0850: Feeding continues, all to older hawklet so far. Smaller one's still not showing any interest in the food, but is moving around.

0856: F hops to 8, then takes off in that general direction. Older hawklet wide awake and alert, looking around primarily toward 3; then sttles a bit to lay next to the sibling, facing 5, but still alert. Smaller one seems to want nothing more than to take a nap.

11:10am - Older hawklet in nest snuggled with smaller hawklet facing 3.

Older hawlet gets up, moves around nest and stretches legs and wings then settles back ontop of smaller hawklet facing 5.

11:14  Older alert looking about picking at the nesting material but not eating it.  Younger asleep , tucked under Older.  No adult in site.
