    Re: Observation Thread

Older hawklet is sleeping, it's 2:29 p.m.  Occasionally it stretches and kicks out it's left leg and foot.  Amazing how fast it's growing, almost overnite it's started to develop feathers on it's wing, and I think on the tail.  Beautiful baby, but almost startling how fast it's growing and developing.  The legs are so strong looking, and the feet are almost adult like.  It's really taking on the features of an adult bird in its wings and legs.  Still that awkward chick look at the same time, cute.

I can't see the little one.  I'm assuming the older hawklet is so large it's hiding the smaller one at this time.

15:23 Both hawklets sleeping.  The younger one has the white patch on the back of his head too. I also have noticed the amazing feet and legs of the larger one.  There are going to fill that nest soon.

15:30 The larger hawklet is awake but resting @ 6, little one @ 9, periodically standing up and exercising his legs. Still wobbly but so much stronger than yesterday!

19:22 Adult female feeding from 4 position the little hawklet.  He is sitting up straight and going for it.  Larger hawklet to his left in the 7 position facing 6.  Female eating some of the prey herself.  I saw her eat a complete large bone with meat on it.  She swallowed it right down, problem.

19:26 Mom feeding small hawklet. Larger hawklet appears to be sleeping through this feeding.

19:27 Larger hawklet awakens to peck at smaller hawklets rear. Little one refuses feeding. Mom eats remainder of meal and proceeds to clean her talons and leave the nest.

    19:32 Hawklets fall asleep

20:33 Mom sitting at 3:00 intensly watching hawklets. She begins preening little one as the large one lies next to it. Little one was on its back but turned over after she preened/pecked at it. She then preened the large one. Little one scooted around to lie closer to the large hawklet.

20:37 Both appear to be sleeping. The size difference is truly amazing. Mom sitting in same position.

20:42 Mom continues to sit in same position almost motionless and appears sleepy, herself. She occasionally lowers her head to look at little one.

Adult F in nest at 3 - the two are asleep in the nest.  The larger hawklet seems to be a bit uncomfortable with his big wings and is moving a bit.  Looks like good night is near.

20:50 Mom pecking/stimulating...I am not sure which..both hawklets, but mostly little one. She has repositioned herself further into the center of the nest.

21:05 Mom appears to be trying to sleep sitting, with head tucked.

    Re: Observation Thread

21:31  Female appears to be sleeping sitting up - first night I have seen this.  The two are pointed at 7 and moving some but are asleep.  Now I wonder if the temperature makes a difference if she trys to sleep with them under her of if it is their size that makes a difference.  We'll see if she gathers them under her later tonight.

I also wonder about the light - it is on all night.  Does that not affect her internal clock?  I guess we will never know the answers to these questions now that Raptorman has left.

23:20 Female Adult still sitting at 3 on the nest.  Head not tucked, eyes open.  Two chicks fast asleep.  Some movement from the chicks from time to time.

23:31 F Adult alert preening.  Any movement from Youngens brings her direct attention.  She seems to be looking for something on them.  She finally starts to preen the sleeping hawklets much to their chagrin.  They want to sleep.  The Oldest wakes and scrathes himself and then falls back to sleep.

    Re: Observation Thread

I was wondering the same thing about the change in her routine last night. I do wish Raptorman was still involved. I guess we could research it ourselves. I may do that tonight, as I am on my way to work, now. Unless, someone has the time to do it today.

07:20 Hawklets are alone now. They were sleeping when I first checked in but stirring a bit now. The nest is getting to be quite a mess. Little one still doesn't seem right to me. Stirring around, but with face down in the nest. It's elbows are pointed in an upward position as if they aren't supporting it's body.

I haven't read this, but it may have some information about their nesting behavior

    Re: Observation Thread

15:15 - Camera zooming in and paning around.  Wonderful shots.  Zoomed in on chicks resting at 7, both awake.  Camera paned outside the nest, up down and sideways.  F was sitting on a support beam outside the nest, I think in 9 direction.  The view was F sitting with the roof of KJRH and the street below.  F seemed to be aware of the camera and she looked straight at it and cocked her head.  She is truly beautiful.  Thanks to the camera people.
