    Re: Observation Thread

20:29  Adult female jumps into nest from 7 and starts to move things around and straddle the chicks.  The nest is getting fuller and she is having a time getting set.  She keeps moving sticks around - seems unhappy with the nest.  Finally settles down over chicks.

    Re: Observation Thread

    April 21st, 07:16

F from 9 brought a branch with green leaves and laid it down just outside the railing at 9.  Some of the leaves are inside the nesting area and the largest chick is pecking at the leaves like it is something to eat.  I wonder if these birds eat any greenery?

I have not observed any prey being brought into the nest yet this morning.

    Re: Observation Thread

8:35 am Adult at 2 position (I think it's K but not sure), brought a small bird and tries to feed chicks. Seems to be having a lot of trouble staying balanced on the edge of the nest as she has "bum wind" pushing her off. Older chick standing up, waiting for feeding. Younger one is lying down I believe, behind his sister, can't really see him well.
I'm actually watching them as I type. This is really cute. After a lot of tussling and repositioning, the adult is now at 5 and the older chick moved over to the prey and started pulling at it herself. She has huge, strong legs!
8:40 Adult finally repositions to face the wind and stand at 8, feeding older chick. I hope there will be enough left for the little guy.

    0850 Cloudy 67'  Winds sse 10

Adult at 10 feeding larger chick - Adult female eating herself.  Younger chick lying head down under Older but awake.  I wonder if the head down position is more of a submissive behavior than anything.  Younger is awake but keeping his head down while the Older one walks on him to get at the food.  Today I am noticing a large white spot of fuzz on the back of the head of the older chick.  I have not noticed this before.  The spot is quite noticeable.

9:00 am  After a short rest period while standing at 3 facing out, the adult leaves. She finished the bird herself and I do not believe the little one got fed this time around. Both chicks resting quietly now.

    Re: Observation Thread

5:43 pm. Adult on nest @ 4, with food. Older chick @ 10, not interested. She offers it to Lazarus but he is turned away and picks at it uncertainly. She swallows a few bites at which point he decides it was a good offer, heaves himself up to stand (strong legs!) and turns more towards her. She starts feeding him. I am truly surprised he was able to stand so shortly after his ordeal and I am again reminded of the beauty and wisdom of nature, even if it seems harsh to us sometimes. This is the test these guys have to go through to prove they are fit to pass on their genes.
    5:48 pm Lazarus still eating.
Edited to add: the wind seems very strong and the adult is having a hard time balancing on the edge of the nest.

6:52 pm. Ahhh, the sleep of innocents. Both hawklets are conched out side by side. Tummies must be full.

19:52 Appears to be feeding the large hawklet She had her back to the camera, so it is hard to tell. 19:55 Mother is cleaning and repairing the nest. Large hawklet is entertaining itself by pulling Mother's tail feathers. Little one is lying next to large hawklet

19:58 - Adult, can't tell which, is perched at 3 looking out. Both chicks are in the front of the nest facing 6, smallest sleeping, largest laying down looking around.  All is calm.

    Re: Observation Thread

20:30 Adult (female I believe) at 9, gently grooming the hawklets. The older one then gets up and stretches up - she is huge! The littly guy moves a bit and turns around. I wonder if he was trying to avoid getting flipped over as the older one got up.

    Re: Observation Thread

9:08 The hawklings are moving around the nest. The little one is exercising as well though his walking is still rather shaky. The large one stands up, stretches her wings and then defecates @ 3. Wow, the size difference is truly amazing. She is probably three times the size of the little guy now. Amazing what one day of feeding can mean. They settle to sleep.

Adult in nest with twigs and greenery arranging nest.  Adult settles in over smaller chick.  Larger chick on outside at 10 position.  You can see the new feathers coming in all over the older chick.  Amazing.
