    11:40am

Those little thieves are going to town on that nest material! I just saw them take off with some more.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs

11:46 - The nest is being raided almost non-stopby starlings. One of the eggs has what appears to be a hole in the top of it. It seems to be the end of the little egglets. Nature re-cycles it just is not pleasant to watch.

Well they pecked the egg and cracked it open. I had to walk away from the cam and missed it.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs

11:56 the cheeky little bird is back - he dips his beak into the egg - then he looks around fearfully - he repeatedly raids the egglet - we can eliminate any fears that the eggs will remain and dissuade Kay and Jay from using the nest again - the starlings will remove all evidence of them

Well now we know how they will dispose of the eggs.

Starlings first took the nest material then came back and pecked a hole in the egg

Decided to take a taste. Evidently didn't like it because it left after that

Great catch, Observer! I missed that live action and appreciate the "evidence" you captured there.

Close-up of eggs, 3:11 p.m., over three hours after a starling first broke into one of them.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs

Wow!  Thank you Catgirl, Observer, and Bville for those really cool pics!!  I logged in today and I thought I saw a gaping hole in one of the eggs, so I went to the forum and... starlings...wow!  I never would have thought of such a thing. Very interesting!    I'm sorry for my erratic posts, but I try to keep up with what is going on as much as possible, and I'm so happy all of you are keeping a close eye on the nest.  Thank you all so much!!!!

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs

    3:36pm

I just got back in time to see the little rascal at it again

I might add for whatever comfort it could be to some. The starling appears to be drinking from the egg therefore meaning it may not have even started developing.

Someone may differ with what I just stated. Just from my experience with duck eggs. As they progress in developing they use up the liquid inside the egg.

3:35 p.m.  I agree, Observer. He was taking a sip,

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs

    3:44pm

Thanks Bville for the close up and great work on the links!!!!

While I was uploading my screenshots the Starling came back and went to the egg again. The camera operator kept moving the camera trying to scare him off. I guess it worked he flew off.

    For the time being anyway

Well I am needed for an Easter egg hunt.!!

    Great Bville Thanks for confirming

    Big Smile

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs

Catgirl, loved the pic of Kay by the camera! Observer, Bville thanks for the pics of the intruders today. I saw the starlings again around 2:20pm, but they only stole nesting material that visit. Someone in the chatroom mentioned that one of the hawks had stopped by and surveyed the damage - did anyone see that? Also, the Eagle Guy from Sutton said the fate of the eggs hasn't been (well?) documented ( assumed he was talking about hawks' abandoned nest eggs). So again, thanks to KJRH for continuing coverage with the nest cam!

EDIT: KarenLovesBirds said she saw Jay at 12:30 today, and we just saw him again at 5:07pm - he had something in his mouth but then my screen went blank, by the time I got it back he was on his way out so I didnt' get to see what he did during the 2 minute visit !!

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs

    CamFan:
5:07pm Jay makes another visit to the nest. While I was trying to determine what he had in his mouth, my screen when blank, only to come back when he was on his way out! So he had a long stick (hubby thought it might be a small snake? we didnt' see it for very long folk, frustrating!) and I don't know what he did with it.. (KarenLovesBirds in the chatroom confirmed that he had previously visited the nest around 12:30.)

    Perhaps a starling?

The info about the eggs being liquid is interesting. Shouldn't they have been more than yolk or embryo? Or, does all the physical developing occur at the end?

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs

I was by the KJRH station around 5:20 and could see Jay on the goldenrod.  I parked, focused my camera and he took off.  Got one photo - and I'll post it later.  I could briefly see him circling off to the east of the station and then lost sight.

Wow, thanks for all the updating during the day - what an interesting turn/twist to this season, to see it all.
