    Re: Observation Thread

13:46-13:58  Female continues to feed Older and then starks to stimulate Younger by pecking his back.  Finally, Older has had enough and stops taking food, walks to edge of nest and defecates.  Younger perks up and starts getting fed.  He is fed for several minutes, both hawklets seem well fed.  Interestingly, if the hawklet drops the food the female will retreive it and offer it again.  Older shook his head once and flung the food across the nest, she retreived it and ate it herself.  Very conservative with the food, which is a bird of some kind today.  Younger really seems quite perky once he started to get fed.

14:15 Jay lands at 9 delivering the latest food - it is a baby squirrel.  He moves to 6 and spends a few seconds with Kay and then leaves via 9. Older is awake and is checking out the carcass which is laying near the nest.  Younger is already in a deep sleep.

    Re: Observation Thread

17:05 - F feeding large chick from 3.  Smaller chick is awake but not begging and not being offered any food, doesn't seem interested.  The larger chick seems to be walking around the nest more and has gone really close to the 3 side of the nest.  I hope she doesn't try to follow mom out of the nest.

    Re: Observation Thread

I have been posting under "Worried About Small Chick". It was recommended to post here as well, for the record.

    4/19/08
I haven't seen the small one do anything but raise it's head and every now and then scoot around the nest a little. That is usually in response to the other one stepping on it. I am absolutely amazed at the size difference today. The little one definitely looks failure to thrive. Something just isn't right with it. And, Mom seems to be aware of it as well.

Yes. That is one of the things that caught my attention right away! The size difference in the two. You should expect some, but not this much. Of course, we haven't really been able to view the baby as we have the older one. But, there is definitely a size difference. I saw the small on pushing up with its legs just now. It just didn't get any where.  Like I mentioned in my other post, it looks like a failure to thrive.  We see that in human babies. The big one is getting a little brave now. And, is making me terribly nervous watching it want to follow it's Mother.

5:05 She didn't feed the small one this time around.

5:10 Did anyone just see that? It looked like someone threw water at them. It hit the post across from the cam and startled Mother. The large baby was sleeping. The small one was stirring a bit. Did the small one defacate, you think? I didn't know it was so explosive, if that is what it was.

5:35 It looks as if she has a good sized bird for dinner. The large hawklet is eating large amounts. Sitting there like a little Buddah, it just about ate the whole bird. It even ate on it's own some of the time. I didn't see her feed Little Laz this time either. I know they care for the strongest of the brood first, but it is hard to watch. I think she knows what we suspect.

    Re: Observation Thread

18:55  Female in nest at 2 o'clock and Older chick alert facing 6 , younger taking a nap.  I have watched off and on all afternoon and the female has remained in the nest most of the afternoon grooming and stimulating the chicks.  The Older one veered dangerously close to the edge of the nest at about 5 - I guess that where the rails come in handy.  The younger one has remained awake most of the afternoon and the adult female stimulated it's back and it got up and walked a bit.  Wings2c saw the younger one defecate.  He still seems weak, but has been alert and awake.

    Clear 59'

23:50 Female adult standing at 4 on side of nest.  Light breeze blowing.  Both hawklets are awake.  Younger is more alert and Older is lying on his side but awake.  Female moves onto nest very carefully gathering the youngsters under her and settles down facing 9.

    Re: Observation Thread

Sunday, April 20th, 8:34am.  Temperature 57, wind SE at 10.  Forecast for today, sunny and 81.

07:55 - babies alone in nest. Large chick awake, small chick asleep.

08:00 - largest chick backed up to the railing at 6 and defecated, she then went back to the center of the nest and layed down next to small chick.

I don't know if there has been a feeding this morning, but there has not been one for the last 45 minutes.  Adult has been gone all that time. Just before 8:00 the largest check went to the edge of the nest at 7 and was stretching her neck to see over the railing.  She could get up on the railing if she wanted to.

0933 Adult (F?) perched and preening. Both babies sleeping

0936 Large hawklet awaken, yawn and preens then falls back asleep

0954 Adult left the nest. Babies sleeping.

0956 Returns and walk across nest. Large hawklet yawning.

0957 Both adults present for a few seconds then one leaves

0958 Adult standing on rail in front of camera. I assume this is the female due the the size comparison?

    Re: Observation Thread

1005 Female leaves nest via 3 - Male left prey (looks like a mouse) in nest.  The Older hawklet is very alert completely focused on his parents when they are in the nest.  She will turn her head and follow any movement.  When the adult female left the older chick turned her head to follow the direction she left.

    Re: Observation Thread

11:10 - F is feeding smaller chick from small mouse at 3.  He is standing and very interested in feeding. Larger chick is resting facing 11 does not seem to be interested in F feeding smaller chick.  For the next several minutes the female's body is blocking the view but from her movements you can tell she is still tearing at the mouse and seems to be still offering food to the left of her body which is where the smaller chick is.

11:26 - F moves away from the camera and moves the carcus to 3.  The smallest check tries to position his tail away but end up defecating towards the center of the nest.

1141 Adult lands on rail at 9 with large green branch and tucks it under sleeping chicks.  Chicks are asleep but moving about some.

    1149 Adult still on rail

1157 Adult leaves by 9 - I believe he adult was Jay (male)

    Re: Observation Thread

19:05 - Both chick resting, alone in nest.  For the second time today I saw the smallest chick preening it's feathers.  He has been awake most times I have looked in today.  Right now he is doing sometime that looks like he is vocalizing.  I have seen it from the larger chick but this is the first time I have seen it from him.

19:13 - Smallest chick doing more vocalizing (looks like).  He then tries very hard to turn his tail towards the edge of the nest, twig in the way, he turns back and defecates to the center of the nest, just missing his sister.  He really seems stronger today.

20:26  Adult preening and pulling feathers from large hawklet. Maybe the small one did defacate on it's sibling, after all. Large hawklet resisting and trying to get away from Mother, without success.

20:29 Mother positioning over hawklets..or trying to. Large hawklet keeps squirmming out from under her.

20:30 She is having a difficult time positioning herself and steps on both hawklets, several time. She used her beak to pull them underneath her

20:32 She has managed to control the hawklets, but appears very uncomfortable with her position.
