What fantastic luck and fantastic pictures! You can clearly see where the "red Shouldered" hawk gets its name in those shots!  I agree, the brilliant pattern on the feathers of the mature birds is very dramatic, it looks black and white but up close it is dark brown.

Oh wise and gracious Master of the Maps, I have a new sighting for you. I spotted a breeding pair on the south side of the river bridge on Memorial in Bixby today. They circled for quite a while out over the river and towards Eagle Rock to the west.

Beautiful birds kaction! I hope Bixby is far from kjrh, because in the first shot that bird has a light chest and prominent "eyebrows" like Jay!  Maybe its his Dad!

Wonderful, KC. Will get your new sightings (this and the Langenheim) onto the Map today.

Regarding Catbird's question about the nesting "terrain" on the top of Spirit Bank: I looked at a site called Live Search Maps--   http://maps.live.com/
I played around there a bit. I don't know that any of these views are any better/closer than on Google or Yahoo Maps' views, but here they are, for what they're worth. Here also is a nice clear photo of Langenheim Park and vicinity.

Bvile: These are great photos. Thank you...I don't see any obvious cubbyholes for a redtail's nest on the bank roof, but I don't have a hawk's eye for such things. Makes me dizzy just to look at the arial shots.

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info

Wow Bville-today's technology is a bit scary, those shots are so clear! The NYC redtails have nested on the SIDE of builidings, on ledges, cornices, behind the statue on the cathedral, and on an air conditioner jutting our from a window, so who knows where they might be nesting! They could be in one of those large trees in the park, too, though certainly someone would probably have noticed a large stick nest in the crotch of a tree by now I would think...but perhaps not. Now would be the time to spot a nest in a tree with all the leaves off.

Bville-just wanted to make sure this great thread didn't drop of the first page!  :)

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info

Thanks, Sallyls, I appreciate your thoughtfulness! And I'll just go ahead and re-post this map here from the new thread. It was so closely tied to recent events, that I put it over there. But this is the place for a more accessible reference.

This displays the vacant lot where Catgirl has frequently sighted and photographed Kay and/or Jay--most notably, of course, during their trysts of March 8. Kay was recently caught there on camera on April 3. Thanks to Catgirl for helping approximate the location.

Bville, I've gotta say, I love your maps. They give us a much broader perspective of Kay and Jay's lives.

I hope we can recruit more members of the Tulsa ground crew to help keep track of the other hawks as well. It would be a fantastic resource.

Hey all someone just posted several pics of another hawks' nest in our UGC content area:

Might want to drop them a line and see where it is...

I took a look at the photos - and then looked online to see if could make an ID - as is not a RedTail.  My un-expert opinion is that it is a redshouldered hawk.  So maybe south Tulsa where there are still some wetlands areas.

Re: The Map Room: Maps and Map Info

Bville-I copied this from the rap thread as I wasn't sure if you might havemissed it in the other discussions going on there.  Workaholic on 4-6:

OK, other sightings today. 36th Street North above Mingo Creek near Mingo Road around 230pm a pair of I think, Red Shoulder Hawks floating around in the winds. Also on 44 around 41st Street and Sheridan there was a hawk on one side in the air, and a hawk on the other side of 44 in the air. I could only tell the hawk outline. Too high up for me to see where the red was. All of a sudden, after a long drought of no sightings, I am seeing Hawks everywhere. RC

It is not a Red shoulder, good guess though from the rusty front-it is either a Cooper's hawk or Sharp Shinned hawk. I've never seen one on a nest before!  Cool.  I left a post and invited the poster to post over here on the raptor rap thread. Was that right, or should I have told them to post it here?  I'm still not sure where the forum wants local sightings posted, here or the raptor rap thread.
