    redfinch:
Hello weeyin!  Tuned into your new site of the falcons. Will be enjoying them in the coming weeks.  How's the weather by you? Ours will be in the 90's the next 4 or 5 days or so.  Hope that breeze holds out to keep things cooler on the birds.

Hi Redfinch, I like fall & winter weather, at the moment our temp's are variable, but at the drop of a hat, it's hot & humid. This weather is not to my liking, although it give's me an understanding into you're severe storm watch warning's, In Toronto we've seen on our local T.V. channel, tornado's that sweep such destructiveness, through various state's, and local region's in America.  Pricher (spelling or name maybe incorrect) but hearing Tulsa was near the path of this tornado, made me hope and pray that you folk's were okay. As we all hope & pray, for other's who suffer, when distaster's strike suddenly. On a lighter note, I'm looking forward to hearing, aw aboot yer day, with Kay, Jay Thunder & aw the other folks who'll be spending a grand time on Saturday next week? Orrabest & Slainte!

    bobdmac:
You did the link right, Weeyin', but for some reason the video won't play, either in Safari or Firefox.

RE Weeyin's new falcons' website:  I, too, couldn't get the nest video on Firefox; but I opened the site in Internet Explorer, and the video popped up fine. Why, I don't know. (I'm not a techie, either, Weeyin.) The nest tableau is precious--Mom w/babies.

Re: Raptor rap: A place for the flock to squawk, talk, and speculate about Raptors and related subjects

If the group meet was tomorrow, my husband and I planned on going, but with it being next Sat., we'll be on our way to Minnesota for vacation to the family cabin on Loon Lake outside Park Rapids, Minn.  about 90 miles east of Fargo. It was my parents (I'm orginally from Chicago), but now we go up there.  We're pretty well isolated in the woods and there's an abundance of wildlife.  Last Sept. we had 10 deer in the yard and a family of foxes, mom, dad, and two pups.  I'm up half the nigh with binocs checking the property to see what's going on.  We always see something.  I hear the lake is up which means good fishing, I hope.  There's a family of beavers that live on the lake and we fish near their dam which makes them upset.  They're always talking to us, but they know we mean them no harm.  And there is always the ever present loon that comes back every year.  We had a pair that returned for about 10 yrs. and then one year there was only the male.  He has a mate but it's the third year without a chick.  It's hard for them to nest because of so many predators around the lake.  Our neighbors have decided to make a floating nest and put it out on the lake.  I'm anxious to see if it's working.

I see there is someone in the nest area.  I'll check the other thread to see who it is and check in over there.   I wonder how long we'll see them?

"For instance, this was a very tough winter in the Midwest, at a certain point all the female Kestrels disappeared. They needed more calories and went further south to find them, but the males needing fewer stayed and looked after things on the home front. "

This is so interesting Catbird! Thanks for posting it. I was in Alabama last winter and we had more Kestrels than usual. Of course, I didn't mind at all. I wish they had stayed all year. Love this little birds and their personalities.

Weeyin, sorry I was actually inaccurate. That was a link to just an image of the front page. They were just trying to get some play off the name of the paper. I'll see if I can dig up some actual news coverage.

I appreciate that bobdmac, as I've been peeking in on the San Jose falcon family, and there's no update on the wee mishap with Mercury/Thunk!

Here's the newspaper story on the naming contest, which includes a little update. Mercury has returned to the nest, where he was greeted by his sisters with some serious "beaking," and it looked like he was regaling them with his travels and showing them how he flew.

And here's an update from this morning (from Yahoo groups):

I just got back from Downtown (about 7:00-8:45).

When I left the two girls were on the ledge behind the nest box,
Mercury was on top of the nest box (or on the ledge), Clara was on
    the SE corner of CH.

Mercury had spent most of the time when I first arrived on the
Louver, either eating or watching mom prepare food for his
sisters. Food was brought by Carlos who gave it to Clara in the
air. While Clara was preparing the food, Mercury cosied up to mom
begging for some of the food she was preparing for the girls. He
later hopped over to the ledge above the nestbox. He spent part of
the time running back & forth exercising his wings. The girls were
spending time either eating (one ate on the upper ledge, while the
other got food delivered on the nestbox level.
By the way, I got your falcon cam link to work in a browser window and in RealPlayer by pasting http://falcon.grenergy.com/ into the address bar. I love the sound too. You can hear the parents announce mealtime when they arrive with prey. There've been some God-awful noises from the tower occasionally, and it's amazing the little one don't grow up deaf.

Thanks for the update stories on Mercury, greatly appreciated. Btw there's a youtube video of Thunder "Oh Them Eye's" posted by Mywildlife video's. I couldn't help think about our comment's on Mercury/Thunk eye's and his wee mishap. Check it out, Thunder eye's are so full of innocence :)

The Great River falcon camera I usually just view, although last night, there was a severe thunder & lightning storm with heavy rainfall. I did turn on the sound to listen & it was so loud, I hit the mute button!

Thanks for the heads up, Weeyin'. I think the video caught a true part of Thunder's personality. Much appreciated.
