Observer: I just sent you an e-mail which I think is going to show up in your home e-mail.

Re: Photos/ screen captures
Observer, I'm so glad you caught these shots! I remember when I first saw your post about seeing the hawks fly around. I had left my laptop on and happened to wake up in the middle of the night. I refreshed the screen and saw your post, and I thought, "No, it must've been a bat or something." Then, all of a sudden I saw two hawks fly by! I was blown away and wished that I had been able to capture it.
I think this is really rare evidence that adds to our knowledge of these birds. We're lucky that the sky was illuminated enough to catch their images on the screen. I've done a little searching, and I haven't found any discussion of hawks flying around at this time of night.

Re: Photos/ screen captures
Bobdmac: I agree. This is unheard of to me and I can't get anything on the internet to confirm it. Observer has generously allowed me to send the photos to Donna, with the times that these were taken, to see if she knows of night flying hawks, or if not, she may post them on her blog site to see if any of her readers have ever witnessed this. Well, that's two witnesses, you and Observer. I will let her know. We have SO much to learn and observations (and PHOTOS) like this are enormously important.

Re: Photos/ screen captures
Catbird, there was an earlier hint of this activity a day or so earlier, when a couple of us discovered that Thunder had reappeared in the nest between midnight and 4 am or so, but that was the extent of it.

Re: Photos/ screen captures
Observer and bobdmac, et al:
Donna has been receiving lots of mail on Thunder from her readers all over the country, and some of it is posted on her website today, even two letters from Blakeman, the raptor biologist, particularly on the subjects of Thunder's frequent and regular returns to the nest, and this night-flying redtail hawk family. It is all much too long to copy and post/paste here, so I hope those interested will visit her site today. As a "teaser"...these from raptor biologist, John Blakeman:
"Well, here's just another example of where dedicated non-biologist hawkwatchers can so significantly contribute to our understanding of the natural history of this great species"...(and this)..."This is just another reason diligent hawk watchers at nest sites such as Tulsa and New York City can make significant contributions to an accurate understanding of Red-tailed Hawk reproduction."

Re: Photos/ screen captures
I don't know how to do a screen capture (I am more than somewhat challenged electronically). Would someone capture and post a picture of the emply nest? I think it would be appropriate. Thanks.

Thank you so very much Catbird. That is so exciting. I am just glad I could help and wish I had gotten better shots!

Re: Photos/ screen captures
I'm posting two new pics in the Critters photo album. They're from someone here in Brookside, and were taken about a year ago. Here's the photographer's note:
I have seen your name mentioned a number of time on the hawk forum observation page, so I am hoping you can pass this on to someone who might be interested. I have just been looking at KJRH's Hawknest pages, and thought maybe I could share a couple of pictures I took June 7, 2007. I live less than 1 1/2 miles from the station so I am curious if this hawk could be Kay or Jay, as it was so close in time to when they started building their nest. I have not found information yet than tells how far their range is. I took photos of the Hawk on at least 3 different occasions last June (several of it eating in a tree!!!), including some video. Such beautiful majestic creatures.
VISIT THE CRITTERS PHOTO ALBUM to see the pics... see if you think it's one of our famous birds :)

Russell - I went back and looked at the videos from June of 2007. I don't think either one of the pictures are of Jay. The coloring and eyebrows are wrong. I don't know about Kay. I would think that if Kay and Jay were a pair buy that time, an we know they were, one would not have been visible to this resident unless the other was in the same territory. I read somewhere that about 1 1/2 miles was the correct area of a RH territory. Based on the fact that I don't think either of the pictures was Jay I would conclude that neither of the pictures was our pair. The territory would have been close.
