November selection: Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks

Year of Wonders by Geraldine BrooksGeraldine Brooks' Year of Wonders describes the 17th-century plague that is carried from London to a small Derbyshire village by an itinerant tailor.

As villagers begin, one by one, to die, the rest face a choice: do they flee their village in hope of outrunning the plague or do they stay? The lord of the manor and his family pack up and leave. The rector, Michael Mompellion, argues forcefully that the villagers should stay put, isolate themselves from neighboring towns and villages, and prevent the contagion from spreading. His oratory wins the day and the village turns in on itself.

Cocooned from the outside world and ravaged by the disease, its inhabitants struggle to retain their humanity in the face of the disaster. The narrator, the young widow Anna Frith, is one of the few who succeeds. With Mompellion and his wife, Elinor, she tends to the dying and battles to prevent her fellow villagers from descending into drink, violence, and superstition. All is complicated by the intense, inexpressible feelings she develops for both the rector and his wife.

Year of Wonders sometimes seems anachronistic as historical fiction; Anna and Mompellion occasionally appear to be modern sensibilities unaccountably transferred to 17th-century Derbyshire. However, there is no mistaking the power of Brooks's imagination or the skill with which she constructs her story of ordinary people struggling to cope with extraordinary circumstances.

    2News Midday is officially starting a book club today! I've just recently started reading books on a regular basis again, and I'm so excited to get others motivated to do the same. So now's the time to pick up this month's selection, Made in the USA by Billie Letts.

    I really enjoyed her novel Shoot The Moon, and since she is a local author I thought this would make a good selection for our "first" book club book.  I haven't read this one yet, so we're all going to be reading it together.

    When you're finished, let me know what you think by emailing me (link is above). You might get to come on the show and we can all talk about it together.

    Wonderful!  I bought this book when it first came out and had it signed by the author.  Haven't gotten around to reading it yet.  Will get started asap.  Great choice.

    I did not realize that KJRH had a book club - I was checking around the forums to see what other forums were available on this site.  (the birds are not up yet this morning)   I am I guess the really early bird.  I will check back and when there is a new book I will try to find it and read it.  As you can tell - I post fairly often here.

    Tune in tomorrow, when a representative from the local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association joins us, as well as the daughter of a woman diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. They will be discussing the book, Still Alice, with us! We will also be announcing next month's selection.

    I have lived through this with a close relative.  It is a gut-wretching experience, but really heightens your awareness of the preciousness of every moment of life.

    Erin you need to post the video of your bookclub.  Some of us had to work and missed it but would love to get a chance to hear what others though of the book.  Oh and whats the book choice for next month?  Coffee

    Erin, I agree -- we working readers need videos!  (Maybe there are videos and I'm missing them...???)  I'm ready for October's selection... It's that time of year when you stay inside in your PJ bottoms and sweatshirts and curl up with a good read!
