6:34. Catbird thanks for sharing you're thought's on Pale Male & Lola, they're a joy and I was thrilled to bit's, when I finally got to see them on a documentary. Also you're thought's on red tail hawks was very insightful from a human prospective, unlike some researcher's, who work with raptor's. Again thank you Catbird, it was an enyoyable read.

 

socal, sincerely hope your pooch comes out of it.  They are our children.  We lost our beloved black lab about 18 mos. ago and I still can't talk about it.  He was the best.  I know how you feel.  Take care of your dog.  I'll be praying for you both. 

Thank you but the kudos go to Donna. I was just passing along an e-mail she sent me as soon as her PC was functioning again. The Pale Male video was what hooked me, hook, line and sinker, and I have been a total maniac about RTHs ever since. I even watch that video (now on DVD) from time to time just to relieve those magical first moments when they leapt into my heart. Donna is a scientist and is still doing studies on RTHs, but she is also a very human, very ordinary person, in her love of them.

She is collecting data now on what RTHs eat. She has found some unexpected observations! There is so much we do not yet know about them. I have been sending her notes from the observation thread about what Thunder is being fed.

socal, my thoughts are with you.  I had a min schnauzer that started with this at ten yrs old and put on phenobarbitol.  Wish the best.

I keep looking but how would we start a Pet section other than, lost & found?

I know all of us are pet & other lovers, that could converse on this.

I thought everybody should know how much drama we've actually been spared in Thunder's fledging....We can be grateful that our Thunder is such a skilled flyer.

Bobdmac: You're quite right about those less-than-pleasant possibilities (shudder). Maybe Thunder's "delayed" fledging gave her the extra strength and sense of security to help her avoid disaster, thus sparing us the upset. (Especially fortunate, since the loss of little Spirit had front-loaded us and the hawk family on trauma.)

Oh no bobdmac! I just peek'd in on them and now I think about it, the camera was on two fledgling's sitting together and there was a ledge above them. That was the same ledge I watched them jumping up on and down from on the site's video archive's footage. Thank the lord for you're quick thinking and being there to help this young fledgling, and I wish all the best for the young falcon recovery. 

By the way, Catbird, I wanted to thank you for that interesting little dissertation from Donna.  I had to laugh at the image of the male dragging a stick around at the nest, "acting butch." I also like the territorial explanation for the larger female, but I wonder if the males don't also compete when they stake out their territory, and if so, wouldn't size be an advantage there as well?

Just to clarify things, Weeyin', I wasn't involved in the rescue myself, but it was my fellow Californians in San Jose, about 45 miles away.  There's a huge following, locally nationally, and apparently a small army of people on the ground there. There's so much web traffic that they've limited the stream to 1-second screen refreshes and 5-minute sessions. However, if you're interested in seeing the two sisters hopping around, flapping, acting cute, and jumping up on the ledge to look out at where their brother might have gone, here's a URL you can paste into a Quicktime player, browser window, or maybe into other players as well.

I can be a dunder head at times, especially when I read about awful event's such as San Jose peregrine, my heart just sank bobdmac, this is a wonderful website and I bookmarked the page after you had spoke of it here. Anyway I'm sure if you had been there, you would've lent a helping hand.

More San Jose Peregrine craziness. This is the latest in the hysterical post-fledge drama of the male eyas. By comparison, Thunder's fledge was buttah! They've now informally named this one "Thunk!"

93 P, our tiercel to be named this evening, spent quite a bit of time up on the
SW tippy top corner of the building after his morning drop-off, and it took very
little time for him to get up there.  A crowd had gathered at the 4th Street
garage by the time I managed to get back out there -- Prabha,  Kate and Jack,
Glenn was there, Mary Johnson,  several others (forgive my poor memory with
names).  We watched him for several hours.  Clara continued cacking at
everything and everyone.
Around mid-morning, he decided to take off again.  Most dramatically, he flew
right over the 4th Street garage, with his parents trailing him.  Unfortunately,
another building was in his way -- "The 88" at third and San Fernando.  He
attempted to alight on a glass portion of the building and slithered down.  We
thought he had landed on a balcony there.  We asked to go up, and it took quite
a while to find the Manager (the building is under construction) who would take
Glenn up to check things out.  They looked carefully, saw the marks on the
building where he had slithered down, but he apparently had left under his own
power. So Glenn, Prabha and I branched out looking for him.
BUT, he had flown to a building across the street from the 4th Street garage, a
three story apartment complex, where he sits as I write this.  We can see him
from my office (but with binoculars).  He's been mobbed by a couple of crows and
his dad drove them off once.  I haven't seen a food drop yet.  Clara had a
pigeon that she had picked up and looked to me like she was going to take it
over there, but she dropped it, cacking loudly.
We have people out but need all the help that can be mustered to keep track.  I
have to take a break here to check work stuff and answer requests from the
press, so will be off the garage for a couple of hours.
Just go to Fourth Street garage.  Jerrie McIntyre will be there most likely and
knows how to reach me if needed.

Bob, I've been meaning to comment on your comments on the great horned owlet video.  Yes, they are probably nesting in a redtail nest but they don't have much choice.  Please, if you're going to blame anyone, blame Mother Nature, not the owls.  Great horned owls simply don't build nests; they have to use nests built by other birds.  The video was made last year, but this year I got to see the female and just the tops of two fuzzy owlet heads when we drove down to Geneva, IL.  It's a magnificent bird.
