    Re: Post-fledge observations

I'm pretty sure it was Jay who brought this meal. The head was lighter in color than Kay's.

11:30 Still mantling over prey. back to camera now. eating. Turns slightly, calls out again (was that a "thank's dad!" ?) Continues to eat.

Gotta love that term "mantling." Maybe Thunder was calling out,"Thank's dad, now buzz off."

    Re: Post-fledge observations

    11:34

Still working on the prey, mantling it in the nest, now facing right. She stops occasionally to look around, then returns to her meal. I couldn't really tell which parent brought the food The visit was too brief for me to ID him or her.

    11:36

She's still working on the food, but now, at 11:38, she seems to have finished, and has moved over to the right edge of the nest.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

11:37 Still eating, but finally just stopped mantling, and has wings pulled in close to sides now. back to camera.

11:38, turning, facing 3, goes to 3, can't see head. stopped eating. Looking down, picking food off talons.

11:39 back to 9 rail of nest, facing dish. Wind almost blowing her off at times. ruffles feathers. calling out again. Still hungry? Walks to platform at 11 edge, near dish, turns and faces 9.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

    Thanks for the ID, Socal.

    11:40

Now she wanders of to the left side of the platform, first at the back, and then over to her usual spot, backed up to the front edge, with her tail over the lip, and facing the dish.

11:41 walks to 9 ledge of platform, faces 3. looking all around. Occasional calling out. Wind ruffling her feathers a bit. small wind now, it seems.
HATE to go.... But so much to do. This was so rewarding seeing the fam in action. Such good parents, Kay and Jay. And Thunder looks so healthy!
    Have fun, gang... Later!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

I think with both parents bringing food, Thunder's going to be in great shape, or at least well fed.

See you later, Socal. Hope it goes well for you. I have to go as well. I hope someone else steps in and keeps up the commentary.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

This was fun. I went up on the roof to see if I could hear T calling... and sure enough, it was quite audible. So I went downstairs to recruit a volunteer photographer and we went back up to see if we could get some "nats." (Lingo for "natural" or "wild" sound, as opposed to studio-recorded audio.)

Anyway, we got up there and couldn't hear anything, but there's Kay standing on "heart attack rail" and watching us intently. As the camera operator's trying to set up his tripod (we're standing in about 2 inches of water from the heavy rain) Kay screams at us... then flies to the north, giving us one more healthy scream as she flies over. Alas, no tape in the camera yet!

We watched her disappear to the north, and turn around to see Jay up on the goldenrod. He's just sitting there, not concerned about our presence at all.

We'll try again to see if we can get some nats of our hawk family... no promises, but I'd love to have it for our video collection.

BTW someone (socal?) wondered if we could create a DVD of all the clips and offer it for sale. In reality, we have very little video tape. Most of what you see online was live captures, and when we do use tapes they get recycled because we're a news station.

However, I believe I can make ALL the video clips available on line permanently, so they'll always be accessible to everyone -- and at no cost.

Okay I really have to get some work done so I'll leave you guys to it...

I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable on the video question, and a couple of Forum members who probably could help have stepped out for a while. On Page 2 of this thread, bobdmac addressed a video question from Debbie W. Don't know if it would help you or not.

What a great effort, Russell. We look forward to those "nats."

Thunder has hopped up to the lower bar above the nest, and faces away from the camera.
