What a long way down. It is good not to be so afraid anymore of her making a crash landing. She has proven she knows very well how to fly, and land, and take off again. I was fascinated to read from BT that Thunder had been making 25 foot flights off her "ring" and back again. And then that 100 foot flight UP to the tower nest...Glory be! These are wonderful pictures. I like her looking into her old friend, the camera, again. Hello.

Yes HLC we read the forum and were shocked to find out that Thunder had returned to the nest! We have been faithfully watching the red hawk story, but this is the first time to post a message on the forum.  We enjoyed taking the pictures and sent them to Russell and did not know that they would be posted, but we are glad that they were.  Thanks to everyone for their kind comments.  Thunder has defied all odds and surprised us all. Go Thunder Go!!!

Oh, my God! What a freaking riot those pictures are. I love the fuzz sticking straight up, and her little nose (beak) in the air.  Those are too funny!

I agree, especially that middle photo--a precocious, condescending smirk right at the camera lens, that says, "I'm a stinker, and I know it! Now, whatareyagonnadoaboutit?"

OK I know this is a little late but here is a screen capture of one of them soaring across the camera screen between 2:00 AM-4:30 AM this morning. It was hard to catch it I never knew when they were going to go by. There were several times two would fly by at the same time but it was too fast to catch. Sometimes they were a lot closer but again too fast to catch. I was fascinated by the night activity. Just below where the word "here" is on the pic

Observer: This is fantastic! I had no clue that they were so active at night! I wondered where Thunder went when she left the nest around 8 each evening. Maybe all kinds of night-school lessons with her parents?

Hey, Observer: I totally agree: a wonderful shot--well worth the concentration it must have required on your part. Thank you for this heroic, early-morning effort!

I guess this would explain Thunder's naps on the nest during the day and evening! Big Smile

    Re: Photos/ screen captures

    Observer?

What time of night are you seeing them?

I just got this off the SanDiego Zoo website:

"Red-tailed hawks are diurnal hunters but see black and white well enough to also hunt at dusk, the time when nocturnal animals, especially rodents, begin to awaken and move around. "

Is it around 8-9 in the evening and maybe dawn? 4-5-6 AM?

    Re: Photos/ screen captures

Sorry for the late reply was fixing supper! LOL!

It was between 2:30 AM - 5:00 AM Central time

I was up around 2:30 AM and I always have the media player on. We have some young ducks we just turned loose on the pond and there is a fox that comes around so I have been on " fox watch". There is also a huge raccoon eating the ducks corn but he doesn't bother them, anyway I was sitting here watching the player when I got a glimpse of something fly across the screen. I watched off and on until about 5:00 AM and every so often they would fly across the screen. I never thought of them being night hunters but it makes sense. This is the first night I saw them flying around. Guess the camera happened to be at the right angle, Here are a couple more shots. My reactions just aren't fast enough!! LOL!

Top about center just left of light streak

    Right next to light streak.
