Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs 4/07/09

Hi all things are starting to slow down a bit now. So can catch up I hope.

Yes Bvill I agree it seems to be covered up by the sticks that look like a pretzel,  thanks for confirming. Glad to see all of you are still around.

Camfan I wondered about the egg left in the nest also. Although I don't think it will be rock hard. We have always removed bad eggs that the ducks have laid and they were never hard but talk about not wanting to break one. That is the strongest most sickining smell you will ever smell!! Maybe it has been cracked though and dried out, then it will break into little pieces. Just my thought anyway.

So good to see all of you hear again.....

    Big Smile

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs 4/07/09

No photos - as recent ones involved in a massive memory card failure this evening.
But have seen Kay and Jay.  Usually see one or the other sitting at the tower in the evening.  The previous two evenings I had seen Jay at the tower.  This evening Kay was there as I went into store.  When I came out 5 minutes later - they were both flying around the Mazzios Tower then circled off to the northwest and I lost sight of them.  It looked like they were having a good time - one of them was chasing the other!!!!

Anyone else with any sightings (woohoo, gunit, workaholic, Russell.....)?

Thanks for the update Catgirl. I see you have been a very busy person!!! Not good about the memory card issue. You are very much appreciated.

    Thanks

From earlier today- looks like a long-tail, rounded tip, looks redish with prominent white terminal band.  I wanted it to be Kay or Jay, but I bet it is a Kestrel sitting in front of the camera.  And when it flitted away it was small, not a big bird, just a small bird close-up. Cool anyway.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs 4/07/09

Finally, a sunny sunrise and a dry day!!!
I still see Kay and Jay every few days on the KJRH tower, usually on the goldenrod and usually in the evening.
This morning Jay was on a lower antenna around 9 am, watching all the busy activities in the Brookside area.

Around 4 pm I could see a hawk preening on the goldenrod - I think it was Jay but I did not have my camera so I cannot be positive - but did not see any darkish spots on the belly.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs 4/07/09

Since today is the first day of Fall, it seems an appropriate time to take stock of where we are in the continuing saga of Kay and Jay. A recent report on the Franklin Institute's redtail nest also supports a look-see--
Note on Della Micah's  Sept 20 blog, Hawkwatch at the Franklin Institute [Philadelphia]:
    http://sunnydixie.blogspot.com/
"From Gene Mancini [of the Franklin Institute] on September 16:
' I have reports from the executive staff that they [the redtails] have been actively rebuilding the nest for the past four days.'"

Della visited the nest site herself on Sept. 17, and reported:
"When I arrived at the Franklin Institute at around 7:15 AM, there were TWO birds on the nest. I managed to get several pictures of each bird (mom and dad) as they flew back and forth to the nest with twigs from the trees on 21st Street and a good picture of dad, back at home on top the Civil War Monument where the eyasses used to hang out. Mom seemed to stay in the nest longer, with dad flying in and out more frequently."

You can find these and other comments on the Franklin Hawkaholics Facebook site:
    http://www.facebook.com/search/?q=%22Franklin+Hawkaholics%22&init=quick#/group.php?gid=93138817028&ref=search&sid=1143894166.1659222845..1

    As to Jay and Kay:
It was on October 10 of last year that Gunit's husband reported skydancing hawks near Mike Patrick Park.
On October 14, Catgirl snapped  photos of both Jay and Kay at the nest, seemingly tending to it.

Excellent detailed reporting Bville!!! I can't wait! Hopefully we'll have the tower cam swinging by the nest soon so we can see for ourselves what it looks like!!!

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs 4/07/09

Kay and Jay tending to their nest on the tower is of course a good sign, and John Blakeman has responded to a Franklin Hawk watcher's observation of those adults brining sticks to their nest on http://sunnydixie.blogspot.com/ today.  What bodes well for the Franklin Hawks must surely be good signs for our Tulsa Hawks, too!

View under tower ring this morning.  There were two different small birds on the ring today, one might have been a kestrel, right size, long wings and longer tail but I couldn't make a positive i.d. The other was seen sitting on the ring for some time, when I saw it it was partly obscured but had a short stubby tail so I'm guessing it was a starling.  We were soooooo hoping to see a HAWK!

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs 4/07/09

Near five o'clock we were traveling down Peoria.  When we got near 41st street I looked up and there soaring in the sky was one of our beloved hawks.  The hawk was floating and flying about in a wide circle.  Then I peered about and I spotted another bird.  At first I was not sure it was a hawk because it was flapping its wings.  Then she gained the height she wanted and unfurled her wings so she could glide through the air with no effort at all.  The two of them circled together about the air above the tower in the Mazzio's parking lot.  As they passed above me I could see the beautiful brown and white banding of our hawks.  It was a joy to see our them together and still gracing us with their presence.  I did look near the ground for other birds.  I saw nary a pigeon or a sparrow.  May nest re-building be in the near future.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs 4/07/09

On the 10 O'Clock news last night Dan teased everyone by saying "Coming up later. Are the hawks back? we will let you know"   Then later showed a pic of a Kestrel on the tower and said at first they thought it was one of our hawks but it wasn't. They are keeping an eye out for them.  I haven't seen the camera on the tower in a long time myself! At least they are watching for them.

Re: Kay and Jay 2nd Season: After Eggs 4/07/09

I see today a number of comments and darling photo of Kay and Jay on raptor rap.  But guess I will post this photo here in response to bville's  "Give me a K, give me a....."
The weather has not been very cooperative lately in helping spot our darling Kay and Jay.  Every few days I do still see one or the other of them on the nesting tower.  Last Friday I saw Kay on the goldenrod at 2:35 pm.  Later in the evening, near sunset, she was on one of the tower antenna and then Jay flew by nearby to the east and she took off and followed him.
