    Re: Post-fledge observations

Hello all and welcome new members.  I have not posted for awhile but I have to tell you what my husband saw last Friday.  We have been seeing an adult Red Tail Hawk soaring in the skys above our neighborhood, sometimes looking at the multitude of birds we have at our bird feeders.  I think it is the hawk I reported finding near the Mike Patrick Park several weeks ago.  Last Friday my husband saw two hawks "sky dancing" together.  Flying apart and then coming together touching talons.  I did not know there were two hawks, I have only seem one.  Now that they seem to be coming over our neighborhood quite often I will keep any eye and my camera out.

WOO-HOO, GANG, IT'S A REDTAIL RALLY!!! (and, oh yeah, the Stock Market, too!)

Happy, happy day! Thank you, Gunit, for the report. Would you mind giving the approximate location for these sightings so I can post them on the Google Map? You don't have to give the exact address, but maybe an intersection? I will include your commentary with the map posting. (So your husband's sighting of the pair was on the 10th?) Looking forward to any photos you can catch in the future. Sky-dancing hawks in the neighborhood--good news on a Monday!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

This is such terrific news! New hawks AND sky dancing! What a precious sight for your husband, Gunit. It is so rare to actually see their airborn sky courtship rituals. And of course, that also means that nest building (or refurbishing) cannot be far behind! I need to remember to start checking the nest cam regularly for signs of new twigs and sticks and greenery, and practice up on my screen capture skills. You just lifted my heart and eyes to the skies again. Thank you.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

So glad you are all still reading.  Yes this is exciting.  I think this hawk is the same one I spotted at Mike Patrick Park, which is on the map.  The "sky dancing" was approximately at the North Sheridan exit off Highway 11 (Apache between Yale and Sheridan).  A redtail hawk has also been seen by me sitting on the lamp post at the Yale exit off Highway 11.  Since all of these spots are so close together (within one mile or less) the assumption is that they are the same hawk, with a new addition of an apparent mate.

My husband and I also go walking near the crossing of 21st Street south and the I44 expressway.  We have seen a  Red Tailed Hawk flying to and from a heavy wooded area just to the North of that area. Good hawk watching time of year.

I have been watching for some word of Thunder. Have I missed anything.  I know Jay and Kay have been spotted.  I would like to get a look at the nest for any activity.  Has anyone seen the nest lately?

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Okie-dokie, Gunit's (and her hubby's) sightings are now on the Google Map. Following Gunit's lead, I've labeled these hawks as an associated group--North Tulsa Hawks. We're making this assumption based on their proximity to one another. Makes great sense to me, and I loved adding another color of placemark (yellow) to the map. And if the skydancing is any indication, maybe we can dream, as Catbird noted, of baby fluffballs in yet another Tulsa location (albeit, off-camera).

Gunit, you can check the map and see if my markers are placed reasonably, or if any need to be moved.
As a reminder, the Google Tulsa RTH Map is here:

    Re: Post-fledge observations

How exciting!  Sky dancing red tails, what a thrill for you guys! Yes, I will have to remember how to get the hawk cam up again in the corner of my screen so I can keep an eye out for any stick deliveries!  Russell, can we do that, when the station doesn't have any pressing need for the cam to be looking elsewhere?  :)

I should have posted the following here, but instead it's on Raptor Rap... So here's a repeat:

Hey, Workaholic and hubby... How exciting for you guys seeing the rth's close to you skydancing! I wonder if Kay and Jay might be doing the same .... Prrrrretty sooon, gang. : ) I do hope Russell will be showing us the nest soon. Although, I have to admit, I might not be as vigilant a nest-cam watcher as last time... I'll definitely consider myself an enthusiast, though! I'll at least be checking in once or twice a day for a brief bit. I do hope some of you will be able to keep a watch more than I with that extra window in the upper corner of your computer screens (even at work, I hope!!!)... I'm banking on those of you who do (who have very nice bosses) to be able to share as much as you can with the rest of us -- screen captures, written observations... And I thank you all ahead of time for any or all that you can share here!!! I'll do my best to do the same, but like I said, I'm afraid it won't be as much as before. Hugs to all...

B'ville - The map is absolutely correct.  Thanks.  You are a genius with this mapping thing!!!

ps - We saw the hawk at J D Metcalf again last evening.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

I am watching the cam via the link on this web site. I have to reset it often as it seems to time out.  I have no idea how to do a screen capture-is there a simple explanation someone cares to offer?

Camera on city view, some large insects- or small bird buzzing it repeatedly! Dragonfly? Wasp?

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Sally: Howie's Screen Capture works for me for making quick and clean screen captures:

    http://www.howiesfunware.com/

There are other ways to manually do it in Windows, but they are slower. With Howie's you can make captures as fast as you can tap the print screen or F12 key (whichever "grab key" you have selected for it). Once downloaded and installed (Howie's Screen Capture Tool is free), use the toolbar (file/preferences) on it to configure it to which "grab key" (like F12 or Print Screen) you want it to respond to, and where you want the captures to "land" when you make them. (I use my desktop). And you also tell it how to name the captures (by number, etc) And you can set it to capture "active screen" or the whole thing, etc. You can even set it to do timed shots though what use that would be for our purposes escapes me. Also you can set what "size" pixels and what program (bmp, jpg, etc) you want. Under Help are more detailed instructions.

However, this program does not seem to work for a lot of folks here, but I think there are other manual ways under a category on the forum called technical help, or something like that, that bobdmac (I think) set up.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Sally: I have sent you a PM with my home e-mail address if I can help in any other way with screen captures, etc. Also, on the second page of the Hawk Forum list of threads, are two threads, one after the other, by tripskqr, on using screen capture the manual way if the Howie's way won't work for you.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Yep, time to watch the hawk cam - might have caught something more than those dragonflies or whatever is zooming about - I could see them too thru my camera lens!!.  About 45 minutes ago both Kay and Jay (I think - I will know more when download and zoom in on photos) visited the nest together and I could see one of them rearranging sticks!!!!!!!

I will post more later this evening about what I saw along with a few photos - unfortunately did not see any sky dancingSad

While I was looking for that particular sighting locale, I wondered if it was indeed the J D Metcalfe Recreation Area, since you had said something about woods. (I've got a hiker icon marking the Area on the Map.) So does this area have hiking/walking trails? I guess this instance supports the marking and labeling of parks, lakes, and such areas on our maps. Thanks again for those locations.
