    Re: Post-fledge observations

I concur - my guess is Kay, based on belly band and the less prominent eyebrows. I am torn about the other one. The face sure looked like Thunder to me. The belly band looked like Sebastian, but the tail seemed to have a hint of red. I am sooo useless at this.

Catgirl: I absolutely adore the photo of Jay perched regally on the tip of the wolf's tail. What an incredible photo op! I suspect that Donegal would love to see it!

PS: (off topic) I have family in Houston, at this moment making a last run for more bottled watter and other supplies, having already taped all their windows, leaned mattresses up against the picture window, and assembled their hurricane "fort" in their apartment living room, of couch cushions and mattresses, for all to shelter under. Please add your prayers to mine for their (and everyone's) safety?

Catbird: my prayers started even before your post for any / all of my hawk forum friends around the country, and Tulsa folk that have loved ones in the path of Ike. Ongoing..... I do pray Godspeed particularly for your family in Houston, Catbird. I've been glued to the t.v. this morning through breakfast and chores, and will be on the treadmill in a minute... Must be gone the rest of the day later on, though. But will pray as often as my heart/mind can hold through this scary event.

The Weather Channel is saying that once Ike moves inland, Tulsa will get 4+ inches of rain. Poor soggy redtails! I hope they all find good shelter in heavily leafed trees!

Yes Socal my exact same thoughts. I have been watching as much as possible also. Okla is NOT suposed to get tropical storms. This will be the second one this year (within a few weeks!).

Catbird my prayers are also with your family. I have a really bad feeling about this storm. Also I just made a remark to my husband a couple of weeks ago the geese were all flying north and it was too early I assume to go where they congregrate before they head south but they knew something we didn't!! When they head south I can guarentee within a month it will turn cold weather.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Socal and Observer: Still off topic (sorry) Thank you for your prayers!

I got an e-mail from my cousin a bit ago. They are hunkered down with their two dogs and one cat on the second story of their townhouse. They are 8 miles from the nearest bay, so most likely the storm surge will not get to them. But Ike does seem as if he has some bad things in store. Certainly power outages, and bad wind, and maybe doors blown in and windows blown in, as with Rita. My aunt is 86 and her daughter, whom she lives with, is barely recovering from major surgery, and between the two of them, there are no stout sturdy hands and backs to help them. The other daughter and her husband are both ER nurses and are already at the hospital for the duration. The brother is in Iraq. Observer: I absolutely do believe what the birds tell me too. They know things that our technology does not yet fathom. Hopefully your geese are well clear of all this mayem, and hopefully the winds will have died down by the time Ike moves into Oklahoma. I keep seeing Jay, soaked, bedraggled, perched on that pole, in the photo that catgirl's daughter took.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Prayers to everyone affected by the recents storms.  Friends in Baton Rouge got hit hard by Gustav; we have family friends in Houston on some river and I am sure they are gone in their motor home somewhere upland. Looks pretty bad for Texas this morning.

Catbird-I hope you have had good news from your family in Texas today and things are all right with them!  Thinking of you.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Catbird - Ditto what sallyls wrote.

sallyls - Are your Baton Rouge and Houston friends o.k.?

Also, so awful about the Los Angeles area train wreck. The latest news report here is that they think the conductor was texting. So much horrific tragedy because of an irresponsible conductor ignoring a red light signal, and texting!!!! He evidently sent a text message to a teenage train enthusiast about a minute before the train crashed. What those families must be going through over such senseless actions of one individual.... Sorry, had to rant.... Just can't fathom it. A natural disaster is one thing, and tragic when lives are lost or wrecked because of them... But the disaster was expected, and one can't stop Mother Nature... However, the senseless (sorry, no other word... must repeat it), preventable actions that cause such massive tragedy simply enrages and boggles the mind...,

    o.k I'm done.

Anyway, I do hope your family (Catbird) and friends (sallyls) are o.k.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Socal: I have been heartbroken to read of that wreck too, and the stupid, careless, actions (and inactions) that caused so many deaths and so much pain and grief. I hope (bad karma) that the engineer who was texting is one of the departed, at least there should be that much justice, that he not be able to be given his job back and do it again.

Sally: I hope you have heard from your friends and family in Ike's path. I haven't heard yet from my Aunt and her kids since about 10:30 last night. No connection when I call e-mail or land line. Not unexpected. It could be 2-3 weeks before they have power again. Very bad. Especially in that Texas heat and humidity.

I hope all our winged friends flew inland on their magic wings and are hunkered down, wet, perhaps, but safe.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Correction on my last post. According to CBS news in Los Angeles there was A red light that he went through, NOT several. One radio news person I heard it from first was wrong... Also, his text was sent evidently one minute before crashing. It was received by a teenager train enthusiast friend of the conductor.

Catbird, the conductor was in the front of the train as it slammed head-on into the freight train. He perished. My heart and prayers go out to his family and friends. I can only imagine how aggrieved they must be -- and I'm sure the word "senseless" must also be in their minds, as well. So very, very tragic.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

I have been lurking here for quite some time, but not a member. When I saw you all worrying about the people in Ike's path, thought I would jump in and say what I know!

I am in Katy, Texas about 30 miles west of Houston proper. Ike really played havoc with Galveston Island, one of my fave relax spots. The whole of Houston and our little city were without power last night. Yes, it is very hot and humid now, specially with everything drenched! Our power came on about 5 pm today. We are the exception though. Most is still out and cell phones are being goofy too.

Thanks for thinkin good thoughts for us. Many have lost all in this last 24 hours, pray mercy for them please.

I am originally from Tulsa/Broken Arrow, and it is so like a taste of home for me on this little forum!

    Party!!! on!!!

Welcome Sunbyter, thanks for the view from on the ground in Texas. Come on in, and know that you are quite welcome here. It is a lively bunch, and all are very nice.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Hi, there, sunbyter. Thanks for jumpin' on in here. We're a friendly bunch, and we welcome you with open wings, er, arms. Not a whole lot of hawk activity lately, but we're biding our time as best we can until a hoped-for second season of KJRH redtail hawk activity materializes. If you haven't checked out our other active threads, do so. Also, the Map Room thread will take you to some Google maps that display our summer of sightings, photos and text included. Kind of a quick guide to many pages of Forum posts.

So sorry to see and hear the news from down your way. I've been to Galveston a nmber of times, and I spotted lots of Sea Wall Blvd landmarks on the TV coverage. I wonder how the Bolivar ferries made out, as well as the hordes of seagulls and pelicans.

    Again, welcome!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Welcome aboard sunbyter, and thanks for the report! One of my Texas cousins lives in Katy too. Although he is in Iraq, his family will be probably okay then, based on your report from Katy. The other cousin and my aunt are in Houston, across from one of the high schools on Rue St Cyr. It is not a low area so they probably are okay, but without power. Rita blew their doors and windows out so that may have happened again. Bless you for your reassurances! So nice to have a Texan on board our mighty ship named Thunder!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Welcom Sunbyter.  Glad you are OK.  From what I have seen on TV it seems that if you weren't in a home near the water/coast and not in a low-lying area things might not be too bad once the utilities get back up.

Catbird-have you tried to text message their cell phone?  I hear that even when calls do not go through, the text messages seomtimes do as they are smaller packets of infomration or something?  I do hope your family is OK!

As much as I love visiting the coast, usually Florida, I just can't imagine living somewhere where you have to face the possibility of going through something like this on any kind of regular basis.  I'd be  a basket case every storm season, couldn't handle it! I am ok here in the tornado alley though, so go figure. Maybe because tornados are so quick, and I feel safe in my basement when storms are coming. Friends in Baton Rouge are OK, haven't heard about the other folks, they are more my parent's freinds and if they are on the road they won't be in touch.

One hopes that the wildlife has some kind of instinct that protects them and gets them out of harm's way, although costal creatures that can't fly, well that's another thing. I haven't heard this year of any rehabilitators being devasted like in Katrina, when the rehab folks got wiped out as well as the zoo and aquarium.
