Socal--I just noticed that you are only one vowel away from Social.  How fitting and how true for Madame Congeniality!

Only after my second cup of coffee, Bville.

Socal!  Owl hooting, how cool!  Try this when you are bored-they have calls of more owls than I knew existed on this site.  Maybe you can identify yours. http://www.owlpages.com/sounds.php

sallyls, that webpage is sooo coo -coool !!!!

After some listening, I've determined that the owl I heard outside our bedroom the other night (haven't heard it since) is a Great Horned Owl... as it sounds very much like the "Pair calling"... also "Typical Male" and "Typical Female" listings under "Bubo virginianus - Great Horned Owl" .... Interesting that the male and female sound almost identical. Anyway, thanks for that! Wow, there are so many more owls and owl sounds on this earth than I ever imagined!

    catgirl:
On one of my many hawk hunting outings, I came across this beauty, enjoying the last moments before the rains started, along Riverside Drive (42nd Place) - near where I have been seeing Jay.  She is also perched in the same dead tree that I took the photos of the bald eagle in August.

A few more of these long distance shots (hmm, who is it?) as well as a few others of birds in the river area and several of the 36th and Lewis RT are up on my flickr site (www.flickr.com/photos/cheryls_camera)

catgirl: I just got through going through all your wonderful, new photos, as well as some older ones at your flickr page... And I must say that this bird in this posting's photo looks alot like your earlier photos of Kay...posted on your flickr site, "page 3" of the "KJRH family" album.. the ones of Kay and Jay sitting together. Does anybody else think this may have been Kay in the above photo, at Riverside Drive (42nd Place?) ??? Also, catgirl, I enjoyed the photo with the beautiful white egret flying by... and that "buzzard", as well... he (or she) is a "Turkey Vulture". We have them here, too. They are BIG. Anyway... Thanks for all of these wonderful hawk and other-winged-creature pics!!

Bville: I love pairing catgirl's and Workaholic's sightings with your map... It's so great to be able to go back and forth (two web windows open...) and compare the sighting with your map! It's such a boon here!!! THANKS AGAIN!!!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

P.S. ---- Workaholic, I must have been perusing catgirl's photos and writing my post when you posted your last comments! I missed them until just now.. Anyway, wow, what a thought.. Maybe Sebastian?.... Is it common for rth's to overlap territories? Perhaps Kay and Jay's territory at the River overlaps the Langenheim rth's territory some? ... Anyway, very interesting to consider! It could be Sebastian... !! ... or it could be Kay!!! Fun to think about who it really is!

Or is it a different one?

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Workaholic and Socal: I had the same thought after reading Workaholic's identification - and I think Donna has said at some point that there are areas where unattached redtails and not-mature-young'uns hang out in Central Park and are tolerated by Pale Male and Lola, and other nesting pairs, especially at this time of year. Once January comes and mating/nesting hormones kick in, the territorial boundaries will be less fluid and young'uns still hanging about too closely will be gently escorted "off the premises" as it were.

So perhaps that area by the river is just such a sanctuary for the adolescent browntails of this year, from both the KJRH and Langenheim nests. Wouldn't that be lovely? With Cheryl keeping watch, we could all also keep watch. Also, Manhattan redtail territories are less than a quarter mile in size, and it appears so far that the Tulsa redtails have much larger territories - yet, if the Manhattan redtails could, over time, thrive, on smaller territories, then the Tulsa hawks could too, leaving room for Violet and Sebastian and Thunder. I do like this scenario!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

    Yeah!  More pictures!!!

You guys are more expert on your local hawks, but what struck me about this shot is the darker heavy belly band.  Looking back, Jay is quite pale-chested, Kay and Thunder both have darker chest markings, Thunder's I think more pronounced than Kay's as the juve band is usually, usually heavier and thicker than the adult's.  If it is their territory, could it be Thunder? If there is plenty of prey she might still be sharing the area with her parents.  Wish I could make out the tail-I don't see red but that doesn't mean anything for certain at the distance.

sallyls: Check out all of the pictures catgirl took in the series of this one bird, and you'll see that the tail looks red --- at least I'm seeing red in it.... Maybe my eyes are getting tired. Anyway, if you get a chance check them out:

Also: Isn't that hawk's tail shorter than Thunder's. It looks more like an adult, shorter tail, to me. But then again... I'm getting verrry sleeeeepy....

    Re: Post-fledge observations

And then this evening on my way home from work, I decide to take the Riverside Drive route, even though it has been rainy all day and I do not have a camera with me.  Drats raining dirty rats, of all the luck, there is Jay just as plain as day.
So I stop and take a couple with my cell phone camera - aaagh, can't see a thing.  So drive home and get my camera and head back, hoping that for some reason he has decided to hang around.
On my way, I spot another RT hawk on a cell phone tower at I-44 and Peoria, so I wheel in and snap a couple of photos but I'm in a hurry and on a mission so I do not take the time to get a frontal view (pic is on my flickr site for all its worth).
I head back down to my favorite parking place off of 42nd Place and Riverside and YEAH, Jay waited for me!!

And of course again, its rush hour traffic so no hope of getting across to the park side, plus rainy and I just plain did not want to make Jay fly off.

    Re: Post-fledge observations

I also did not want to spook Jay due to the precarious placement of his perch during the tail end of rush hour traffic.  A few of the photos are at my flickr site, but I know you will get a kick out his perch - just feet away from the traffic - talk about a bird's eye view!!  King Jay on his royal mounts!!!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

bville, the photos I posted earlier today of the 36th Lewis RT were new ones, taken yesterday and the day before.  The two from yesterday the RT was in a tree right next to the cell tower I have seen them on  the other times.

Thanks everyone for your feedback on IDing the RT on Riverside that I took yesterday/posted today.  I concur!!!!! - in other words, I'm not sure who it is!!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Yeah catgirl!!! I feel like I just got a very privileged viewing of our two beloved KJRH rth adults today!... Out there in their River territory doing what they do best... providing us hawk gawkers sights for sore eyes : ) O.K., so maybe I'm jumping to conclusions on the photos that I'm thinking are pics of Kay... but gosh darn it, I DO think it's Kay!!!! And this guy on the wolf's tail (are those wolves or coyotes?) truly is Jay, I believe.... Very funny, catgirl, describing Jay "on the tail end of rush hour". Ha! I love it! He does look sooo regal there, though, doesn't he?

    Re: Post-fledge observations

I looked up the momument information at Natureworks.org - it was donated in 2006 and they are Prairie Wolves.  There are quite a few similar wonderful sculptures all along Riverside Drive.  A few blocks south is one of eagles - I keep hoping to find something interesting perched on it!!!

I wish I was so clever with words that the "perch during the tail end of rush hour traffic" was purposeful - but alas, like my sightings/photos, sometimes I'm lucky, sometimes I'm not.  But I did have to go back and re-read it and chuckle over my cleverness!!!!

    Re: Post-fledge observations

Hi All. I went back and did some futher picture comparisons and I believe those that think the pic was Kay, may be right. Sure looks like her markings.  Of course, with me, they all tend to start looking alike after a bit. My eyes are old and don't see well anymore.

What a photo, catgirl, another for the greatest hits album, for sure! Tooo much--Jay Red Hawk, high-tailin' it on Riverside Drive. (So would he then be on the north end of a southbound wolf?)

Thanks for the reply to the map question. I'll get that sorted out tomorrow.
