    Re: Observation Thread

Sunday, April 13th, 10:30am. Female just finished feeding babies, a small bird was lunch. It seemed like the largest baby got all of the meal.  The smaller baby was being pushed down by the larger baby.  I did not see the smaller get anything to eat. Female left nest, babies quiet.

    Re: Observation Thread

12:30 PM CDT - Parent feeding at least one hawklet.
12:38 - Feeding has continued.  Hawklet being fed may be holding its sibling down so it can't feed.  Smaller hawklet seems to be struggling to get up but not successful.
12:44 - Parent settles down over chicks facing 8.

    Re: Observation Thread

12:23  F feeding hawklets, older defecates (good sign)

    12:46  F broods facing 9

    13:06 F brooding facing 9 while sleeping

Note: most raptors (owls excluded- they close the top eyelid) close their eyes by bringing the lower eyelid up. Raptors also have a nictitating membrane (clear eyelid that help clean and protect the eye. Birds can not create tears so this third eyelid helps preform the function of tears.

Also note birds don't go into a deep level of sleep like many mammals. They can sleep while roosting as well, but are always alert to sounds of danger.

    Re: Observation Thread

Sometime prior to these observations one of the adults brought a stick with greenery for placing on the nest. It can be seen in the 6 location of nest edge. We don't know exactly why many raptor species bring greenery to a nest, before or during use. Some theories suggest as an insecticide, other suggest to show an active nesting territory.

16:28  F feeding both hawklets part of small rodent (mouse, vole ?)

16:34  F jumps to 9 ledge then flies toward 9.

A shadow of the lower body of a hawk can be seen in the upper right corner of the screen, shortly after the F flies.

16:45  F returns via 3 and broods hawklets facing 6 while rearranging greenery into nesting sticks.

4:25 PM CDT - Parent brooding facing 10.

4:27 - Parent gets up and walks to 3 in nest, begins feeding hawklet.

4:30 - Finally see the other hawklet's head way down in the nest.  Never saw 2nd hawklet get any food.

4:34 - parent hops to ledge at 9 and flies off.  Hawklets alone in nest.

4:44 - Parent flies in from 3.  Settles over hawklets facing 5.  Spends several minutes  moving the evergreen branch, which has been flapping in the breeze behind the rail, to various positions behind the rail.

18:50  Adult (not sure which one) feeding older hawklet.  Hawlet seemed not so hungry , adult eating as well.  Adult sets down on nest over both hawklets facing 9:00.  Sun is low and makes shadows on the nest.  I do see the green nesting material.

    08:56  F stretching

    08:58  F flies toward 9

    09:06  older hawklet defecates

09:12  F arrives from 3, stands over hawklets

    09:24  F flies toward 9

09:37  M arrives from 9 with prey (mouse, vole or mole) places @ 4, roosts on ledge at 9 then rouse

    09:42  M preening

09:52  M flies toward 9, cam pans briefly

09:57  M arrives from 9 with stick, places @ 5, perches at 7 on rail

10:02 cam zoomed in on hawklets and prey

10:40 adult arrives from 3 (unable to identify because of zoomed in cam)

10:48  F broods hawklets facing 5 (cam had zoomed out)

    11:00 F pivots and broods facing 1

11:25  F up and feeds hawklets (cam zooms in on hawklets), both are fed but not a great deal before F flies toward 9

Note: Adult raptors will normally not feed entrails to eyasses and at the nest site will consume them themselves to help keep nest cleaner.

rouse: the action of the bird to shake itself to help realign the feathers

stretching: birds will often balance on one leg while fanning their tail and opposite wing and leg.
