Re: Post-fledge observations
Hey catgirl! Hey Catbird! Hey Bville! Missed you guys... Been busy this holiday weekend with dear hubby doing bicycle stuff, and garden stuff... by the way, hubby says Photoshop is the best... yes, expensive, but worth it.
And as for you, ms. catgirl: You're back!!!! Oh boy! ... Happy to hear that all your kids are settled into their academic life just fine... wow for Caitlin! Is she going to do the diving, for sure? ... at least it sounds like she's "diving in" to her new collegiate environment with such energy and optimism... it's wonderful to hear.
Your photos of Jay, and of the other two hawks , which I'm not sure who those two are this time... sorry : ( ... are soooo wonderful to see! Thanks so much for those! That squirrel on your flickr page is verrry healthy looking, by the way... Tulsa is such a great environment for all matter of critters, it seems. And the coo-cooing pigeon (very cute refrain)...who had the AUDACITY to assume Jay's throne .... WELL!!! He has another thing coming, doesn't he? ... especially if he continues to play "Jay" on a regular basis!
Such fun, all this......SOOOO glad you're back, catgirl! And yay!!! --for your mapping, Bville, and your discerning observations, Catbird.... oop.... gotta go,... dinner! Later...

Catgirl: I think this the best collection you have done of Jay, and it is so lovely to see him in a tree! I love the Jay and f(r)iend photo!

Re: Post-fledge observations
What a cool pic and great art work to go with it, King Jay!! Ok little news then bigger news. I have seen one of the adults (perhaps Gwen) sitting on a telephone pole to the west of Spirit Bank North of I44 for the last couple of days. Feathers look a bit messy, perhaps molting? Anyway, that is all the hawks I have seen in the Langenham area. Did spot a hawk flying over the hood of my car at about 87th and Memorial Sunday. It seemed to be headed into a wooded area to the east of Memorial Drive.
Now for the bigger news, just annouced. The New NBA team coming to Oklahoma have decided to name the new team after our Thunder. Oklahoma Thunder. (well, ok maybe there were other influences in play, but I will just chalk it up to the popualirty of our little Thunder hawk).

Thanks, Workaholic, for the news and for another indelible mental image--Thunder in a little BB jersey....Go for three, little girl!

OklahomaThunder!! I like it. I can just see her now, flying through the hoop!!! HaHa!
It is molting time for a lot of the birds, I know some of our resident birds are pretty scruffy right now...one of the Screech owls was bald for a week!

Re: Post-fledge observations
I've hit the motherload. Two, Yep that is Two, Hawk sightings in one day!! I was driving between Sheridan and Memorial on 110st and from the side of the road on the ground a huge redtail flapped up and above my car. It flew to the top of a light pole and perched there. As I was trying to get to Conrads's before the Purple Hull Peas ran out, I did not stop and study it. Was an adult though, beautiful red tail.
So this evening, I am heading up to Whole Foods, by the longest route possible from my apartment, which is via Skelly Drive just north of I-44 and 51st at Harvard. Over to the right, on the Bridge that both Catgirl and KCActionphoto have taken pics of, there sits, another Huge Red Tail. I believe this one to be Gwen, the adult female mom to Sebestian and Viloa. Neither of which I have seen in severl weeks. So anyway, I am buzzing down Skelly towards Periora, gaze off to my right just in case I see a Hawk and there she is perched up on that bridge, pretty as you please.
I pulled into the parking lot about 1/2 block west of the bridge and slowly edged my car around until I was parked parallel to the curb at the end of the bridge. It was maybe, what 15 feet, 20 to Ms Gwen. She sat and looked at me while I just starred at her. She is molting most definitely, or else she has a bad case of feather rot. She looked for a few minutes, then flapped, hoped to the closer rail to look at me some more. Once I got a really good look at her, she turned around so I could see the rest. She definately has a ligher patched of feathers on the back of her head. And a brilliantly deep red tail. I have not seen a hawk that close up before, not an adult. She is huge. As I needed stuff from the store for dinner, I only stayed about 15 minutes, and when I started my car up to drive off, even that close to her. She never moved, just watched carefully.

Blessings upon you and those two hawks, Workaholic!
For striking it rich this day on behalf of all of us Forum folk, you merit the coveted Socal
Commemorative Gold Panners' Award, which shall be fashioned as shown below, as a heart filled with gold nuggets. Unfortunately, being a penniless bunch of hawkwatchers, we do not have one of these on hand. And unless we can persuade Thunder to take up her tin cup from her days as a destitute-looking, seemingly motherless waif on Heart Attack Ledge (if you recall that obscure reference), this award will be in name only. However, your finds will be noted completely free of charge on our Google Map. :) Congratulations and Thank You!!!

Re: Post-fledge observations
You bet, Workaholic. You know, thinking on this, I've decided that these bright little "nuggets" we discover from time to time--outside and inside the Forum--actually shine then within our own hearts, as well--a much more precious place of honor. So thanks for this new one.

Re: Post-fledge observations
Workaholic: Congratulations! That is so neat! What a terrific day! Amazing that she just sat there on the bridge, so close. Gives me the shivers to just think of the magic you must have felt! That was truly an urban-hawk like thing for Gwen to do! It is good to know they are still around, and hopefully will give us more fledglings next spring! You mentioned the patch of white on the back of her head. Doesn't one of the twins have that same spot on the back of her head that it seemed that the mockingbirds and jays were aiming for?

Re: Post-fledge observations
Catbird, the patch is not especially white, it is just lighter color, more like beige. And yes Viola, I think has the light colored patch on the back of her head.
After not really seeing any hawks for a while, it was really cool to see two different ones in the same day.

Re: Post-fledge observations
Thanks for sharing the close encounter, Workaholic! It gives a vicarious thrill, even from afar! I, too, have been having some close encounters of late with some local hawks here in So. Cal.... some rth's and some red-shouldered hawks, and some (which I think, but am not absolutely sure) were goshawks.... one devouring prey very close to the side of a less-traveled road I was riding my bike down... I didn't have my camera with me, but it wouldn't have done any good, as I was a bit too far for the level of camera that I own... and anyway, the individual was skittish and flew off each time I attempted to get a bit closer.... We have quite a good population of hawks here, though, which is very heartening! Oh! and I forgot, about a mile from home one day recently, I spotted a white-tailed kite flapping / hovering over a field next to a local church. A neighbor sited a falcon a few miles from here... That would be cool! I'm continually keeping my eyes peeled, and thinking of my hawk-forum friends each time I see one of Nature's beauties, wishing I could just phone y'all up and tell ya about it... Of course it would be great if my cellphone camera was worth one grain of salt... then it would be such fun to send pics through the email / texting features! Well, friends, just know I'm out there thinking of all of you! And thanks, Bville for that "nugget" post for Workaholic... I absolutely agree with all you said!
p.s. hi tippersteffi1!!! Welcome back!
