    Re: Photos/ screen captures

Love the shot of the Mississippi Kite. I have not seen one yet. This one is a male, the females are darker colored for camouflage.

The Cooper's Hawk hunts bird feeders. The zoom into a group at a feeder and the bird that attempts to flee straight away form the Hawk never has a chance. Those that scatter at angles tot he oncoming hawk usually get away. I've seen one once, but did not have my gear with me.

The hawk on the roof is not a Red-Shouldered, the tail is too long with dark bars, probably a Cooper's or Swainson's. It appears to have a small rodent (field mouse, gray mouse or maybe a large mole) in its talons. The Cooper's does have a differnt colored head than body where the Swainson's tend to be the same color and according to photos the tail doe snot looked barred. I gues sat a Cooper's. Nicely done.

Thanks for the info and pictures of the different hawks.  My guess was a Cooper's.  I know its hard to see, but to me it looks like (in my pics) that the hawk is holding TWO animals in that right talon - a mother rat and baby?  It is definitely a "talon-ful"!!

The woman that I spoke with the night all 3 KJRH hawks were together, mentioned something about some Mississippi Kites nesting in the area - so that may have been what I saw and posted above, as was several blocks away.  Maybe it was one of its family members getting mobbed in the tree nearby.
