    Re: Observation Thread

8:41 Same position,Same as a far corner at left, perch on grating and peering around. Calls out/heads up, eyes flitting around/preening under wing feathers another (easy as pie in the sky) for Thunder as wind still blows her head on.

8:47. Same as above/no food drop by parent as of yet.

    Re: Observation Thread

Hey, Weyin (and whoever else is watching), I was doing a little research last night, trying to find out what we might expect from Thunder in the next few weeks, and I came across this photo diary of some urban red tails in Southern California. If you can tear yourself away from Thunder, or when you get a few moments, it is a must see! The photos are terrific, and most of them are supplemented by a brief and often humorous description of the action. It covers several weeks of post-fledge activity, broken into "chapters" of separate slide shows. If this is any guide, we're in for some interesting times, although we won't get much done--particularly the Tulsa crew, if they want to get out and take more photos.

8:52.am Thunder preening to perfection. Tulsa's morning looking a lot brighter than in wee hours earlier, though its still windy up in Thunder's neck of the woods....so to speak!

8:55 Talons gripped on rim at far left of deck area, holding that stance and looking just confident actually. Eyes flit's here and there, mostly watching the territory around her, looking directly below now

8:59 Kay on tower beside her?/great close up/thanks camera optr., is that the sun starting to peek out?  Jay could be on the hunt for prey, so Thunder may just get breakfast after all!

I agree, Weeyin. That's some serious preening. She's still going. Did you notice she occasionally takes out little tufts of downy feathers? She's looking pretty dry now, at 9:08 and has stopped preening for the moment.

    9:03. Thunder in same position.

Bobdmac odd you should mention that, I did some online searches on red tail hawks, and I'd have to check my history to find out what websites I was looking at?. Anyway I did come across some funny stories by local folks in their cities & towns & lots of great snap shots of red tail hawks. One especially with young hawks using a back yard trampoline, unblievable but thanks to the folks picture its believable. :)

Yeah, the trampoline story was pretty  funny. So here's a new screenshot:

    Almost dry

    Re: Observation Thread

At any rate, from that photo diary, it appears that K and J will continue to feed Thunder for a few weeks yet.

9:27 - She can really hang on with those talons. Do they call them talons on a hawk? She's dried out pretty well.  Hopefully food drop will come shortly.  Will check out the photo diary later.  I'll have to write down what page. If not, I forgot where things are at and go back pages to find things I wanted to read.

While we're waiting for the camera to find Thunder, who's gone off-screen from her perch on the nest railing facing the camera, here's another screen shot.
    M-o-o-o-m, I'm up here!

    Re: Observation Thread

bobdmac:  Thanks for the photo diary link. You're right--it's going to take some serious, dedicated time to explore that collection. With the great photos and commentary, it looks to be a treasure trove. I've only selected a few photos at random, and immediately realized I need to go about it in a systematic way. But already, there is a favorite shot--the "mina pieta"--the mom touching her dead baby who'd just fallen from the nest. What a tender, personal moment in time. Just eloquent. Thanks again.
