    Mojo: Tragedy and Triumph

I haven't posted for some time because we have had an incredibly difficult couple of weeks.

It began when we took Mojo in to get her fixed. Maggie called to say the vet had bad news -- when trying to sedate her for the procedure, she crashed and it took them 45 minutes to get her stabilized.

I went to get her that afternoon (Tuesday, July 8) and she was basically unconscious. The next day, she still hadn't come back around. Her front legs were curled up and becoming stiff, and she couldn't even sit up.

By Wednesday afternoon she had started opening her eyes a bit more and moving her head around but still couldn't sit, much less stand.

We would leave her at the vet during the day and bring her home at night, feeding her a mixture of cat food, electrolytes, and water with a syringe. We had to give her physical therapy every couple of hours, stretching out her front legs for her and trying to get her to stand.

After another day or so she began trying to stand, but she was weak and unsteady. She still couldn't walk, she'd fall over and we could tell she was getting very frustrated.

We also had to learn how to express her bladder, because she couldn't use the cat box at all.

Friday, the vet managed to help her have a bowel movement. However, through the entire weekend she never had another, nor would she eat or drink from a bowl, and Maggie and I became increasingly concerned.

While talking to one of the vets over the weekend, I confirmed my suspicion that Mojo had lost her sight. The vets think she might see a little light and shadow, but she's definitely blind.

Monday the 14th we took her back in again so they could work with her. To complicate matters, we had our annual show at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center that week, a massive undertaking for which we prepare for months. (You can see pictures of the show HERE.)

Knowing we couldn't be home Tue-Sat night, Maggie and I sat and did some hard thinking. We worried that our baby was suffering and that she wasn't going to have a good quality of life. We decided that we'd give it a couple more days then if we had to, we'd let her go.

Tuesday, Maggie called me from the car on the way to the vet. Mojo had used the cat box inside the carrier! At least, she tried -- although she kind of missed :) She had to have a bath when she got to the doctor's office, but it was a huge relief for us.

Meanwhile, she kept working on her walking. She'd bump into walls, furniture, other cats... but she didn't slow down. More and more, she'd get up and "map" her surroundings. Her balance improved, and soon she wasn't falling any more.

By Wednesday, she began somehow sensing when she was approaching a wall or other large object. Don't know how to explain it, but she'd get within a foot or two of a wall, stop, and turn away.

Then, I found that she had wandered over to one of the food bowls and was working hard at trying to eat the dry food. For some reason, she has a really hard time with it... she can get the kibble in her mouth, but then tends to drop it as she attempts to chew.

Seems that the more she tried, the angrier she got -- and the angrier she got, the more she tried! She had gotten the hang of eating wet food out of the bowl, and learned how to drink water without submerging her whole face in the dish.

Thursday, she began to play... and when I put her on my lap for a bit so she could take a nap, she purred -- one of the sweetest sounds I've ever heard.

Mojo has begun discovering toys, and she likes to charge at sounds. I'll scratch on the carpet, and she'll get into "kitty charging mode" then suddenly pounce. She doesn't do anything when she finds my hand, but seems pretty proud that she located her "prey."

The other cats don't really know what to think about her, they surely know there's something "off" about her but they still don't quite trust that she won't launch another of her attacks, as she was wont to do before her crisis.

Now we're dealing with issues like keeping her from falling off the second floor landing, since she's bound and determined to go upstairs. That's interesting, because when she still had her sight she went up there maybe once or twice. She turned up there last night and again this morning, and as I left for work Maggie was stacking boxes around the base of the stairs and Mojo was busy knocking them over and trying to get past them.

I have taken a lot of photos and even some video during this lengthy process but with the show (and work, where I"m a week behind on several major projects) I haven't had time to do much with them yet. I will try to get some posted soon...

Mojo has taught me just how brightly burns the spark of life, and how patience and will can tackle incredible adversity. To say she's special is a gross understatement. That she has touched our lives goes without saying.

Russell- First of all it is good to hear from you again.  Thank you for the Mojo update.  That cat is surely blessed, she has more than nine lives.  It must have been very hard to experience this with her, but once again love triumphs over all.  I am so glad that she seems to be adapting very well.  She will survive this and it will make her even more special to your family.  My prayers and thoughts are with your family (human and feline).  Keep us updated when you can.

No doubt in my mind--in that parking lot, on that evening in May, Mojo was waiting to be found by you and your wife; and the two of you had come there to find her. What a story--the patience and will, trust and love within all three of you--and how they nurture "the spark of life" that sheds light and warmth all through your special home. Continued prayers for continued healing. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, Russell, what a heroic little cat! I hope you're keeping some kind of diary. I think it would help you write something that would benefit, if not inspire, other pet owners whose animals have had setbacks. I'm sure all of us will be anxiously awaiting periodic updates.

    Russell:

You, Maggie and Mojo were very intended to end up with each other. She is so blessed to have you two, and vice versa. You're right about the will that kitty has. She typifies the phrase "When the going gets tough, the tough get going". I like that kitten for that very "tough", stubborn, life-embracing spirit of hers. I'm with her... When life gets hard.... fight like heck to pick yourself up, and get back to being able to enjoy it again!!! There's too much love and joy in this life to miss out on it all!!! Keep up the good work, loving and caring for her... Kudos to you and Maggie : )
My prayers and blessings for all of you are still ongoing...

    Re: Mojo: Tragedy and Triumph

wow Russell!  What a difficult but heartwarming story!  Suggestion-what about one of those "baby gates" as I called them that you could put across the bottomof the stairs to keep Mojo from going up? And you could open it when you needed to.  I hope Mojo continues to improve and live a happy life.  Purring and playing are very good signs!

    Russell:

    Welcome back!!

That is a most inspiring story of how tough we all can be. Pretty soon he will be getting around as if he can still see and it will make you wonder, but loosing one sense just makes another stronger. You have been through many trials with MoJo already so you know you and Maggie were in the right place at the right time. At least you two have the patience and loving kindness MoJo needs. You are such a wonderful family.

    Thoughts nd prayers

What an amazing cat that Mojo is! And what amazing people you and Maggie are.  Love does overcome all things, does it not?

    Re: Mojo: Tragedy and Triumph

Thanks for all your support.. Mojo's truly miraculous.

I've posted a few video tracing her recovery from her first few steps (unassisted) to her first attempt to get off the bed in one piece.

You can find them at www.youtube.com/rtmills

    Enjoy!

    Re: Mojo: Tragedy and Triumph

Russell, I am bleary-eyed from staying up too late watching your Mojo (aka "Pickle") videos.... Too compelling, I just couldn't stop watching that tenacious little kitten and all her (STUBBORN) antics!... especially the repeated attempts to walk on the nightstand, and your repeated "NO Mojo" 's!!! Too funny... and too precious!!!
What is amazing is the progress with each video. It was like DAILY she was exponentially better!!! The difference between her very pitiful first video, and the fifth is remarkable! What is so terrific, also, is your and Maggie's obvious love and patience for her. Anyway, wonderful documentary of The Little Kitty That Could!!!! : ) I especially enjoyed her scaring off the house "Bully" -- "Uncle Cairo", at the food bowl! ... and the play attacks at your feet, your hand on the carpet, and your shoes on the bed. So cute! And her wanting to be up on the window ledge with her "Auntie Gabrielle" is also endearing.

Russell, thank you for taking us in to her realm and letting us get to know her. She is wonderful, miraculous.... and so worth it all!!! Again, my hat is off to you and Maggie for your loving efforts with Mojo! Keep up the good work with her!

    Re: Mojo: Tragedy and Triumph

I totally agree with socal. Although I have been trying to sneak in watching your videos of Mojo today and still haven't finished yet. That is so wonderful of you Russell and your patience and love you show for his care. They really do show such progress through each video it is amazing and very entertaining. You won't be able to tell he is blind before you know it. I bet he will have such excellent hearing that he will hear everything! You won't be able to sneak anything by him.

How wonderful and thank you for sharing.

    Re: Mojo: Tragedy and Triumph

Awwe Russell, those videos are precious.  What a trooper Mojo is she's really coming along great.  Looks like her sense of hearing is really getting sharper too.  I love the attack of the shoes on the bed & the socks in the last one.  She is quite the character & bless you & your wife for the extreme patience you show, while also gently correcting her when she is doing something wrong.  You guys are terrific.  Thanks for keeping us posted on her progress....

Yes, yes, Observer, I've been wondering the same thing. Russell, how are Mojo and the rest of your critter crew?
