The Oral Roberts University Music Department invites you to attend a Patriotic Concert honoring the men and women of America's armed forces.
Presented by the Oral Roberts University Wind Ensemble and University
Chorale, Monday, November 9th at 7:30 pm in Christ's Chapel on the ORU
Campus. Admission is free.
This concert is dedicated to the men and women of the armed forces of
the United States of America and to God and it will be held in Christ
Chapel, at 7:30 pm on Monday, November 9th. Our concert will be a mix
of newer works with more traditional patriotic arrangements. Of
particular note is a composition by Robert W. Smith titled "Inchon." It
is dedicated by the composer to his father, a veteran of both the
Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Inchon was the location of a surprise
amphibious assault that turned the tide of the Korean conflict and
freed Seoul from the forces of communist North Korea. This composition
includes an unusual special effect in which the audience will
experience the band imitating the sounds of a Marine helicopter taking
the troops from the flight deck and into the landing zone. Another
newer work on the concert is James L. Hosay's "Black Granite III," a
march dedicated "to the men and women whose names are forever engraved
in the Vietnam Memorial." Also to be performed is a contemporary
setting of "My Country 'tis of Thee" by Rick Kirby titled "An American
Fanfare," and a moving arrangement of "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" by
Steve Rouse. The concert will close in a more traditional fashion as
the Wind Ensemble is joined by the ORU University Chorale on a medley
of the music of all our armed forces; army, navy, marine, coast guard,
and air force; and Peter Wilhousky's famous arrangement of the "Battle
Hymn of the Republic." Admission is free.
